'House of the Dragon' Season 2 Episode 3: Why Driftmark's heir may not be Rhaenyra's child

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'House of the Dragon' Season 2 Episode 3 premiered on June 30, 2024, on HBO. The engaging episode had deep storylines and layered character arcs intertwining as the factions get ready for an inevitable war.
Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best) is a character who plays an important role in this episode as she councils Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) to avoid war and meet Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) to discuss a possible resolution.
Another Important conversation that Rhaenys is a part of is with her husband Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint). The conversation centers around the heir to Driftmark and the possible dangers that surround Corlys and Rhaenys as they are both actively involved in war.
Rhaenyra Targaryen sends Joffery and Rhaena away in 'House of the Dragon'
After an assassination attempt on her, Rhaenyra has to take the difficult decision of sending Rhaena Targaryen (Phoebe Campbell) away to Pentos along with her sons Joffery, Aegon, and Viserys. Rhaena's dragons are not grown and Rhaenyra wants her to be away and be a mother to the three young children.
This puts a question mark on who will be the heir to Driftmark. Earlier, Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault), Lord Corlys's grandson was named heir to Driftmark but he died at the hands of Vhagar and Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell).
Lord Corlys and Rhaenys had two children Laenor Velaryon (John Macmillan) who is presumed to be dead and Laena Velaryon (Savannah Steyn) who also died in season 1.
Lord Corlys had then named his grandson Joffery as the heir to Driftmark but with Joffery also away now, there seems to be no one left to take the reins of Driftmark.
Lord Corlys doesn't want either Rhaena or Baela Targaryen (Bethany Antonia) to be at Driftmark as he doesn't consider them to be capable in the sea and both of them are dragonriders.
Who inherits Driftmark in 'House of the Dragon'?
In 'Fire and Blood', it is Alyn of Hull (Abubaker Salim) who inherits Driftmark after Lord Corlys Velaryon. Alyn of Hull gets recognized as a Velaryon by Rhaenyra Targaryen upon Lord Corlys's insistence. In the book, Alyn of Hull is rumored to be the illegitimate son of Laenor Velaryon, however, his true parentage is always in doubt because Laenor is a homosexual.
Alyn of Hull is more than capable in the sea and fought with Lord Corlys in the battle at Stepstones. Alyn of Hull along with his brother Addam of Hull (Clinton Liberty) become an important part of the Dance of the Dragons. Addam dies trying to prove his loyalty to Queen Rhaenyra.
Alyn of Hull is named Lord of the Tides in Aegon III Targaryen's reign and is the true successor to Lord Corlys Velaryon rather than any of Rhaenyra's children.
