'House of the Dragon' Season 2: From Meleys to Vhagar, here's a guide to all the dragons in the show
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'House of the Dragon' Season 2 is set to stream on HBO on Sunday, June 16, 2024. The fantasy action-adventure series is incomplete without its most captivating supernatural element: the dragons.
'House of the Dragon' serves as a prequel to 'Game of Thrones' and centers around the Targaryen house. Fans of 'Game of Thrones' were introduced to the gigantic creatures through Daenerys Targaryen's three dragons, which she used to conquer the world.
However, the events in 'House of the Dragon' are set about two centuries before 'Game of Thrones', during a time when dragons were much more common in the Seven Kingdoms.
'House of the Dragon' features numerous dragons and dragon riders. As the series delves into the Dance of the Dragons in its second season, viewers can expect to witness even more dragons taking center stage.
Here's a look at the dragons we saw in season 1 and a few others who we will see in the coming season.
Vhagar
Vhagar is the largest dragon in the realm and holds the title of 'Queen of All Dragons'. Vhagar is one of the few dragons that survived the era of Aegon's conquests, famously ridden by Queen Visenya Targaryen.
In 'House of the Dragon', we see Vhagar being claimed by Laena Velaryon (Nanna Blondell). However, Vhagar unwillingly kills Laena she commands him to do so, leaving the dragon unclaimed once more until Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) claims him.
Vhagar plays an important role in the final episode of the series as he kills Prince Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault) and his dragon Arrax.
Vermithor
We get a glimpse of Vermithor in 'House of the Dragon' Season 1, and he is expected to play a significant role in the second season. He is the only dragon who can compete with Vhagar, although he is slightly smaller than Vhagar.
Jaehaerys Targaryen was the last rider of Vermithor, who has remained unclaimed since then. The first season teased Vermithor being ridden by Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith). Vermithor is nicknamed the Bronze Fury.
Balerion
While Balerion the Black Dread is not seen alive, a statue of him is featured, and his legend is recounted. He was known to be so massive that his shadow could swallow a whole town.
He was Aegon's mount during his conquests and later ridden by Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine). Balerion was famously nicknamed 'The Black Dread' and was the last surviving dragon from Valyria.
Arrax
Arrax was among the smallest dragons and met an untimely end due to a mistake that harmed both him and his dragon rider, Lucerys Velaryon.
During an encounter with Vhagar, Arrax threw a fireball at the larger dragon, enraging Vhagar, who subsequently tore both Arrax and Lucerys apart.
Caraxes
Caraxes is a lean dragon who has an unusually long neck. He is ridden by Daemon Targaryen, who will lead him into battle during the Dance of the Dragons. Caraxes is known for being a fierce dragon and a formidable opponent for anyone who faces him.
Meleys
Meleys is ridden by Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best) who is known for being one of the quickest dragons outpacing even Vhagar and Caraxes. The dragon is called the 'Red Queen' due to its unique copper scales that distinguish its appearance.
Seasmoke
Seasmoke is a young dragon known for being nimble while flying. It is distinguished by its silver features and was ridden by Laenor Velaryon (John Macmillan).
Laenor is presumed to be dead in the first season leaving Seasmoke unclaimed. It will be interesting to see if the dragon makes an appearance in the second season of 'House of the Dragon'.
Syrax
Syrax is claimed early by Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D' Arcy) and will likely play a crucial role in Season 2 as Rhaenyra goes to war to assert her claim to the throne in 'House of the Dragon'.
Syrax is still young and has yet to fully mature, much like her rider who is expected to demonstrate her fierce side in this season.
Vermax
Vermax is another young dragon who is claimed by Prince Jacaerys 'Jace' Velaryon (Harry Collett). We expect to see a lot more of this dragon in the second season as Jace makes a voyage to Winterfell. Vermax has a striking appearance with its olive-green scales.
Other dragons expected to be featured in 'House of the Dragon' Season 2
Apart from the dragons featured in Season 1, a few other dragons haven't been featured heavily yet but may have a significant role to play in the coming season. Here's a look at them.
Moondancer
Moondancer is bonded with Baela Targaryen (Bethany Antonia), the daughter of Daemon Targaryen and Laena Velaryon.
Dreamfyre
Dreamfyre is bonded with King Viserys Targaryen and Alicent Hightower's (Olivia Cooke) daughter Helaena Targaryen (Phil Saban).
Silverwing
In George R.R. Martin's literature, Silverwing is Vermathor's mate. She has been unclaimed since the death of her rider Alysanne Targaryen.
Tyraxes
Tyraxes is a young dragon who is bonded with Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon's youngest son Joffery Velaryon.
Sunfyre
Sunfyre is expected to feature heavily in the coming seasons. He is known to be the most visually spectacular dragon and is claimed by King Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney). As per the book 'Fire and Blood', Sunfyre is the one who ultimately kills Rhaenyra.
