'The New Pope': Malkovich in eyeliner gets fans digging his 'deathrocker' look more than his John Paul III
He is a man of virtue, a characterful aristocrat, the new pope of Rome, but most essentially, "sexy old man in eyeliner".
HBO’s ‘The New Pope’ introduced us to the ever-talented John Malkovich as Sir John Brannox, who has been elected as John Paul III, while Pius XIII lies in coma still.
Before the series unveiled its new pope, fans of ‘The Young Pope’ were highly disappointed about not being able to see Lenny Belardo anymore. However, when the series returned to television with its second installment, not only did it bring back Jude Law’s signature charm, though in the form of illusions and flashbacks, but also presented us with an extremely fashionable Sir John Brannox. Not only does he outdress all the other characters with his style statement, but also tells Meghan Markle what to wear and what not to.
While a fan expressed, “John is so goth and I love that about him. #thenewpope,” another seconded the opinion tweeting, “Sir John Brannox’s initial look - that plum suit. Awesome. I’m sold. #TheNewPope”
In Episode 1 of ‘The New Pope’, we also learn that Sir John Brannox used to be a member of a rock band in the 80s, which explains his highly visible eyeliner. Of all the stunningness fans observed in Malkovich’s character, his eye makeup seems to have stolen the show.
“#TheNewPope wears an excessive amount of eyeliner and describes himself as “fragile, like porcelain”. He’s got to be a member of the MCRmy, right?” joked one of the viewers.
Meanwhile, another added, “The New Pope: Sir John Brannox (John Malkovich) is a sexy old man in eyeliner who used to be a death rocker in the 80s and is now the primary selection for the new Pope. Please give me some death rock flashbacks”
‘The New Pope’ airs on Mondays on HBO.
