HBO announces August 12 premiere date for new seasons of comedy-dramas 'Ballers' and 'Insecure'
The Dwayne Johnson-starring 'Ballers' and Issa Rae-starring 'Insecure' will premiere back-to-back on August 12.
HBO has announced that the new, upcoming seasons of comedy-drama series 'Ballers' and 'Insecure' will premiere on the network back-to-back on Sunday, August 12. The former will be returning for its fourth season while the latter will be in its third installment.
Created by Stephen Levinson, 'Ballers' looks at the lives of former and current football players and stars Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson in the titular role of Spencer Strasmore, a retired NFL player who has reinvented himself as a financial manager of other NFL players. The series initially premiered on the network in June 2015 and saw Johnson garnering praise bringing his patent charm and charisma to the role. The upcoming season will air between 10 and 10:30 pm ET/PT.
Each of the past three seasons has featured 10 episodes each, with the fourth season also expected to follow the pattern. A trailer for the season has been captioned 'Global Goliath' and sees Spencer and Joe Krutel, the financial advisor at Anderson Financial portrayed by Rob Corddry, take their skills to Los Angeles in a bid to expand their roster and horizons in the world of action and extreme sports.
English comedian Russell Brand will play a starring role, with other cast members including the likes of John David Washington, Omar Benson Miller, Donovan Carter, Troy Garity, London Brown, Jazmyn Simon, and Brittany S. Hall. The series is executive produced by Stephen Levinson, Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Peter Berg, Rob Weiss, Julian Farino, Denis Biggs, and Karyn McCarthy.
'Insecure' will similarly begin its third season on the same day but will air after 'Ballers' between 10:30 and 11 pm ET/PT. Created by Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore and based partially on Rae's acclaimed web series 'Awkward Black Girl,' the series stars Rae and Yvonne Orji in the leading roles.
It chronicles the friendship of the two black women as they deal with their own real-life flaws while attempting to navigate two different worlds and cope with an endless series of uncomfortable everyday experiences. The series premiered online in 2016 to universal critical acclaim, seeing itself selected as one of the top 10 Television Programs of the Year by the American Film Institute.
'Insecure' also saw Rae earn two Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy, in 2017 and 2018, as well as an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
However, she's just one member of a talented ensemble of regulars that also includes Jay Ellis, Lisa Joyce, Y’lan Noel, Natasha Rothwell and Amanda Seales. Issa Rae, Prentice Penny, Melina Matsoukas, Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky, Jonathan Berry, Dayna Lynne North, and Jim Kleverweis serve as executive producers for the show.
