'Clueless' sequel series starring Alicia Silverstone receives disappointing update—everything that happened
Peacock had been developing a 'Clueless' sequel series that would have featured Alicia Silverstone in the lead role, reprising her role as Cher Horowitz. However, in a rather unfortunate turn of events, the streaming platform recently confirmed, as Variety reported, that it won't be moving forward with the show for now. The 'Clueless' sequel series was announced by the NBCU streaming platform back in April 2025.
According to reports, both Paramount and CBS Studios remain committed to the project and to retaining the IP. As and when the network decides to enter the film distribution marketplace with the project, it is expected that the perennial fan base and popularity of the 1995 original film will ensure a steady influx of buyers. Until that day, fans sadly have no other option but to wait. Although the 'Clueless' sequel had been in the pipeline for a while, exact plot details are still scarce to come by. However, it is known that the series would focus on Horowitz's life many years after the events of the original movie.
The series is written by Stephanie Savage, Josh Schwartz, and Jordan Weiss. In addition to penning the screenplay, all three of them are also doubling up as executive producers. Savage and Schwartz are executive producing through their banner of Fake Empire. On the other hand, Silverstone is also on board as an executive producer, in addition to starring in the series. The original 'Clueless' movie was written and directed by Amy Heckerling and produced by Robert Lawrence, both of whom are now serving as executive producers on the sequel series. In the past, Universal Television was associated with CBS Studios, but has since backed out of the deal.
The original 'Clueless' movie, released in theatres in 1995, was loosely based on Jane Austen's novel 'Emma'. Apart from Silverstone, the cast also featured Paul Rudd, Brittany Murphy, Stacey Dash, Elisa Donovan, Breckin Meyer, Dan Hedaya, and Donald Faison. The popularity of the movie prompted Peacock to develop a separate 'Clueless' project back in 2020, one that would have made Cher's best friend and soulmate, Dionne, the center of much of the action. Despite being promising enough, the project didn't make it past the development stage. On the other hand, a television adaptation of the movie aired first on ABC, then on UPN, and ran for three seasons between 1996 and 1999. Rachel Blanchard played the character of Cher in the television series. Elsewhere, Peacock has an interesting line-up of upcoming scripted shows, including the comedies 'The Paper,' 'The Burbs,' and 'Twisted Metal,' as well as the dramas 'The Day of the Jackal' and 'Five-Star Weekend.'
