'Freud': Release date, plot, cast, trailer and all you need to know about Netflix's Austrian period crime thriller

Netflix brings to screen a mystery thriller revolving around Sigmund Freud, an Austrian neurologist and the father of psychoanalysis. We are to see young Freud in the claws of a 19th-century murder case that showcases immense brutality. The thriller will see Freud using his groundbreaking techniques to track a serial killer in 19th century Vienna.

Release date

Season 1 'Freud' is set to premiere on March 23, 2020. The first season will have eight episodes about 45 minutes each. 

Plot

If you're interested in murder mysteries with an added in a psychological twist, 'Freud' may push the right buttons for you. Based on the biography of well known Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist Sigmund Freud, the series will chronicle the events of Freud's life from 1885-1890 where treating hysteria was not common and nor was hypnosis.

The narrative begins in 1886 Vienna where young and hungry Freud reveals his first theory resulting in intense discussions in the scientific community. He then involves himself in a murder mystery working with Fleur Salomé (Ella Rumpf) and inspector Alfred Kiss (Georg Friedrich)

Robert Finster

Finster plays the role of Sigmund Freud, the man responsible for psychoanalysis. The actor is known for his roles in 'Krieg' (2017), 'The Way To Live' (2011) and 'My Brother's Keeper' (2014).

Georg Friedrich

Friedrich plays the role of inspector Alfred Kiss. He is an Austrian actor and is known for his roles in 'Wild Mouse' (2017), 'Bright Nights' (2017) and 'The Piano Teacher' (2001).

Ella Rumpf

Rumpf will play the role of mysterious medium Fleur Salomé. She is a Swiss actress who's known for her roles in 'Raw' as Alexia - a film that won the 2016 Sutherland Award for the original and imaginative first feature at the London Film Festival. She's also known for her roles in 'Tiger Girl' (2017) and 'The Divine Order.'

Other cast memebers include Christoph Krutzler, Brigitte Kren, Anja Kling and Philipp Hochmair.

Creators

The series is directed by Marvin Kren and is produced by Netflix, Austrian public broadcaster ORF, Bavaria Fiction and Satel Film with the support of Vienna’s Filmfonds Wien and Media. Kren is from Vienna himself and has been a recipient of many awards for his contribution to TV and films such as 'Four Blocks,' 'Rammbock,' and 'Blood Glacier.'

Marvin Kren, Benjamin Hessler, Stefan Brunner have writing credits of the series.

Freud’s first trailer introduces us to the young Sigmund just as he begins to explore a different kind of knowledge. There’s a serial killer on the loose and Freud is helping the only team quipped to stop the monster.
