SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: 'Frankly Speaking', on Netflix, has captivated audiences with its delightful mix of humor and romance. Premiered on May 1, 2024, the series quickly gained popularity for its unique premise and engaging storyline.

The show stars Go Kyoung-pyo as Song Ki-baek, a respected news anchor who, after a freak accident on a reality show set, loses his ability to lie. Kang Han-na co-stars as On Woo-ju, a dedicated writer dealing with professional setbacks and personal guilt.

Over its 12-episode run, 'Frankly Speaking' takes viewers on a journey through Ki-baek’s career downfall and unexpected transformation. His blunt honesty, which initially causes chaos at his workplace, gradually reveals deeper layers of his character and challenges the passive culture of his TV station.

Woo-joo, meanwhile, grapples with the repercussions of Ki-baek’s truth-telling, leading to the cancellation of her show and personal struggles. Let's find out if 'Frankly Speaking' is worth binge-watching on Netflix.

'Frankly Speaking' on Netflix delivers a delightful mix of humor and romance with a unique twist. The show introduces us to Song Ki-baek (Go Kyoung-pyo), a respected news anchor who ends up in a hilariously awkward situation when he gets stuck in an elevator with writer On Woo-ju (Kang Han-na).

The plot takes an unexpected turn when Ki-baek, due to a freak electrocution on the set of Woo-ju’s reality show, loses his ability to lie. This new trait, which should be a boon for a newsreader, instead leads to his downfall at JBC. Ki-baek’s blunt honesty gets him in trouble, eventually causing him to denounce the corrupt station and walk out, much to Woo-joo’s concern and guilt.

Despite his newfound disinhibition, Ki-baek is not insufferable. Instead, his straightforwardness makes him 'thoughtfully rude', setting boundaries and calling people out on their nonsense. This refreshing approach contrasts sharply with the passive culture at JBC, adding depth to his character.

'Frankly Speaking' is a refreshing take on K-Drama romance

Woo-ju's life takes a turn for the worse as Ki-baek's honesty gets her show canceled and her position undermined by a former mentee. Ki-baek, now jobless, moves back in with his family into a building owned by Woo-ju’s mother. The two find solace in each other’s company, sparking inspiration and hints of romance amidst their professional woes.

'Frankly Speaking' cleverly subverts typical K-drama tropes. While the setup might seem familiar two characters brought together by circumstance and destined to fall in love, the show injects a refreshing realism into their relationship. Ki-baek and Woo-ju’s bond grows from shared struggles and mutual respect, making their attraction believable and relatable.

Unlike many K-dramas focused on absurd wealth and superficial relationships, their connection feels grounded and authentic. The chemistry between Go Kyoung-pyo and Kang Han-na is also very compelling.
