The series premieres on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at 9 pm ET.
How to watch
'Our Kind or People' is set to release on FOX with subsequent episodes airing at the same time on FOX Tuesday nights. The episodes will then be available for viewing on FOX.com and the FOX app, as well as Hulu the next day. The series is also set to premiere on Disney+ via the streaming hub Star as an original series in selected countries.
Plot
The show is inspired by Lawrence Otis Graham’s provocative, critically acclaimed book, 'Our Kind of People: Inside America's Black Upper Class,' the series takes place in the aspirational world of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard, a historical stronghold where the rich and powerful black elite have come to play for over 50 years. 'Our Kind of People' follows a strong-willed, single mom as she sets out to reclaim her family’s name and make an impact with her revolutionary haircare line that highlights the innate, natural beauty of black women. But she soon discovers a dark secret about her own mother’s past that will turn her world upside-down and shake up this community forever. The show is a soapy, thrilling exploration of race and class in America and an unapologetic celebration of black resilience and achievement.

Yaya DaCosta
For six seasons, Yaya DaCosta has starred as ER Nurse 'April Sexton on network drama Chicago Med'. DaCosta’s theater work has included the Sonnet Repertory Theater’s production of 'Twelfth Night' and the Signature Theater Co.’s revival production of Leslie Lee’s 'The First Breeze of Summer', directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson.
She holds a B.A. in international relations and African studies from Brown University.
Morris Chestnut
Morris Chestnut has had critical and commercial success as a film and television star for more than two decades. He is best known for his memorable roles in films, such as 'Boyz In The Hood', 'The Brothers', 'The Perfect Holiday', 'Think Like A Man' and the commercially and critically acclaimed 'The Best Man', as well as its successful sequel. He currently stars in FOX’s 'The Resident' as Dr Barrett Cain, an intimidating neurosurgeon who believes himself to be a superman physician, capable of curing crippling diseases.
Joe Morton
Emmy Award-winning film, television and stage veteran Joe Morton is best known for his dynamic role as Rowan Pope in Shonda Rhimes’ groundbreaking network series, 'Scandal'. Morton made his Broadway debut in the Tony Award-winning musical 'Hair' followed by his starring role in 'Raisin' for which he garnered a Tony Award nomination and Theatre World Award.
Nadine Ellis
As an actor, Nadine Ellis has played a range of incredible women on television over the years, both fictional and non-fictional including unsung NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson on the network series 'Timeless'. In her 20-year dance career, she’s had the opportunity to work with prestigious talent, including leading the Dynamites in the film 'Hairspray', dancing with Beyoncé at the VMAs and getting her start as one of the original Pussycat Dolls.
Kyle Bary
In 2018, Kyle Barry landed a spot in 'New York City's ABC Discovers Showcase'. He currently can be seen on the streaming series 'Ginny & Georgia' and most recently wrapped production as one of the lead roles in 'Beauty', a Lena Waithe-scripted streaming film.

Alana Bright
'Our Kind of People' marks Alana Bright’s professional acting debut. She was one of the featured performers in the streaming documentary 'Homeschool Musical'.

Lance Gross
Lance Gross is an accomplished actor, producer and photographer. He most recently was seen in the role of Lincoln on 'Hawaii 5-0'. He won four NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role on 'Tyler Perry’s House of Payne'. Gross also is the creator, producer and star of the digital series 'I Turned My Camera On', which combines his love of photography with a series of celebrity interviews.
Rhyon Nicole Brown
Rhyon Nicole Brown featured in FOX’s 'Empire' as Maya, a highly trained ballerina and vocalist with a flare for getting what she wants. This fall, she will star in the cable telefilm 'A Christmas Stray.' She starred as the feisty Lizzie Sutton in the award-winning cable series 'Lincoln Heights'.
