LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: When ‘Firefly Lane’ first began on Netflix, it didn’t get the attention it deserved, however, slowly but steadily, it garnered a dedicated fan following, which also means plenty of discourse amongst the fans who seem to be more than conflicted. It has almost become a matter of Tully versus Kate, played by Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke, as the two relatable characters’ friendship is put to the ultimate test in ‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2 Part 1.

‘Firefly Lane’ is a drama series, which means there is room for flawed characters who will make plenty of mistakes, but as the series draws to a conclusion with ‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2 Part 2, one can’t help but wonder, who is the real villain?

Fans rush to Tully’s defense

As mentioned before, this drama series has given devoted fans plenty of room for discourse in regard to Tully and Kate’s friendship in ‘Firefly Lane.’ If you have watched the series, you already know that these two friends have been through hell and back in two seasons that span over a timeline of three decades. There was nothing that could keep them apart for too long, but that changed towards the end of ‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2 part 1. Tully put Kate’s daughter and their three-decade-long friendship on the line after an unfortunate accident.

Kate completely iced Tully out after the events that took place, and fans took to Reddit to discuss this. One fan wrote, “Marah got herself into a situation, called Tully and Tully went to save her. I get being angry but Kate took it waaaaaaay too far.” The emotions that viewers went through after watching ‘Firefly Lane’ were incredibly heavy and that reflects on this discourse of who was right and who was wrong. Kate was being a mother, but in the midst, she forgot to be a friend.

On the same Reddit thread, another fan said, “Kate was over the top in her refusal to forgive Tully. I was really annoyed with her. Honestly, I was glad when Tully got into another elevator and Kate ended up alone on the floor crying. We don't always need a happy ending.”

Is Kate Mularkey the ultimate villain of 'Firefly Lane'?

At the end of ‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2 Part 1, Kate was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, and ultimately that’s what leads Kate back to Tully, and fans aren’t too thrilled about it. The Reddit discussion is endless as one fan writes, “She shouldn’t reach out just because she’s now the one that needs support. It’s selfish.” Frankly, despite Kate’s cancer and everything she is going through, the fans are giving her the perfect villain arc, and it is possible the creators didn’t anticipate that, especially since Kate’s character is based on Kristin Hannah and her mother, Hannah being the writer of the book the series is based on.

Not every series needs a happy ending, but ‘Firefly Lane’ has majorly revolved around a strong female friendship, so whether the fans like it or not, Kate and Tully will be spending time together in ‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2 Part 2, but we can’t deny the fact that Kate and Tully both could do with some therapy, or friendship counseling if that’s a thing!
