'Extracurricular' Season 1 Ending Explained: JiSoo, Gyuri leave us with many questions, Season 2 has to happen
Spoilers for 'Extracurricular' Season 1
'Extracurricular' Season 1 ended on what we could call an open-ended climax or leaving the door open for a possible second season.
We choose to believe the latter because there is an important question that needs to be answered about JiSoo (Kim Dong-hee) and Gyuri's (Park Joo-hyun) life. The high school students have nothing in common except for the fact that they are both trying to escape from the life that they are currently living. In an attempt to save up enough money to make his dream come true, JiSoo creates an app that is a service provider for men and women looking for "compensated dates".
He doesn't reveal himself and uses a tough man to ensure safety for women who choose to be a part of this escort-like service. He takes a percentage of the payment in return and uses that to pay for his school, academy, food and shelter. His father is a gambler and his mother abandoned him when he was young, so JiSoo can do nothing but depend on such means to ensure that he has a bright future which includes a college education.
Things seem to be going according to plan as JiSoo even manages to save enough money after working on the app for more than a year. However, it is after he meets Gyuri that things take a dramatically worse turn with the two of them ending up almost losing their lives. While they do escape the many obstacles over the episode, the finale sees JiSoo get stabbed by someone whose life he had ruined.
And this happens just when JiSoo begins to believe that everything about the paid dating app has come to end. He has no one to call for help because Gyuri, who had worked with him the last few months also decided to leave everything and go to Sydney, Australia. She did offer JiSoo a chance to go away with her because she had enough money to fund both of them, but he rejected the offer.
However, now that he has been stabbed and has no one to turn to, the first person that he thinks of is Gyuri. Coincidentally, she also arrives at his home and sees that the boy she had fallen in love with bleeding on the floor. She does try to help save him, but JiSoo is badly hurt and can't even move. Gyuri even gives up midway and just sits next to him as he catches his breath.
She is in tears, but that is all we see before the police detective Hae-gyeong arrives to check up on him after receiving a tip.
What we expect to see is for her to find JiSoo passed out with our without Gyuri. Instead, all that we see is bloodstains everywhere on the staircase. So does that mean Gyuri and JiSoo managed to get out and stay safe or does this mean JiSoo joined Mr Lee in death? This is the most important question which needs to be answered if the show gets picked for a second season.
The other question is if Minhee (Jung Da-bin) managed to live. Other than Gyuri, she is currently the only one who knows the truth about the paid dating app as she was one of the girls who used it to earn money and support her boyfriend.
It isn't until the last episode that she finds out it was JiSoo who had hidden behind that automated voice. She records his confession and JiSoo finds out about it when she is hearing the playback. A struggle ensues, where JiSoo tries to get hold of the recording and by mistake, he pushes Minhee around. As the two struggle on the steps, she gets hurt while JiSoo pushes her and is left to bleed to death.
We do see an ambulance arrive to pick her up and take her to hospital, but that's where the track ends. So this is another thing that could be explored in the upcoming season if the show is renewed.
All 10 episodes of 'Extracurricular' was released on April 29 on Netflix.
