LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Fans of horror movies are eagerly anticipating the release of 'Evil Dead Rise' in April 2023, and there have been plenty of updates about the upcoming film to keep them intrigued. The 2013 movie 'Evil Dead' was a reboot/sequel to the original trilogy and received critical acclaim for its respectful treatment of the source material. 'Evil Dead Rise' is the fifth film in the franchise, which also includes the TV series 'Ash vs. the Evil Dead', though it doesn't continue the previous storylines.

Like 'Evil Dead' (2013), 'Evil Dead Rise' is a spin-off that features the Deadites returning to terrorize a new group of characters. Although both Sam Raimi and Fede Álvarez had announced their intentions to make sequels to 'Army of Darkness' and 'Evil Dead' (2013), respectively, those projects never came to fruition, in part due to Bruce Campbell's decision to retire from the Ash Williams character after the TV show. It's been a decade since Álvarez's 'Evil Dead', and now Lee Cronin takes the helm for 'Evil Dead Rise'.

Who is in the cast of 'Evil Dead Rise'?

According to recent updates about 'Evil Dead Rise', Alyssa Sutherland has been added to the cast to play Ellie, a mother of three, while Lily Sullivan will star as her estranged sister Beth, who is set to be the main character. Other characters that are expected to appear in the film include Bridget (Gabrielle Echols), Danny (Morgan Davies), Kassie (Nell Fisher), Jessica (Mia Challis), Scott (Tai Wano), Gabriel (Jayden Daniels), and Jake (Billy Reynolds-McCarthy). It's worth noting that, just like the 2013 'Evil Dead', 'Evil Dead Rise' will have a separate storyline from the earlier films, and none of the main cast or characters are from previous entries in the franchise.

While the focus of the post-'Army of Darkness' films has been on how the Necronomicon has impacted other groups of unsuspecting people, rather than on Ash Williams, 'Evil Dead (2013)' managed to pay homage to the original trilogy while still charting its own course. In fact, Ash only appears in a fourth-wall-breaking moment during the film's final scene, in which Bruce Campbell delivers his iconic catchphrase, "Groovy." Unfortunately, it seems that Campbell won't be making an appearance in 'Evil Dead Rise', as he's only involved as an executive producer.

What is the runtime of 'Evil Dead Rise'?

The upcoming 'Evil Dead Rise' film also announced its official runtime, which will be the longest movie in the franchise, clocking in at 96 minutes. While the 'Evil Dead' films are known for their fast-paced and entertaining narratives, it seems that the filmmakers have expanded on the franchise's signature style to create a longer cinematic experience. However, with a lean runtime of under 100 minutes, it's likely that every moment of 'Evil Dead Rise' will be used effectively to tell an exciting and thrilling story.

In a world where franchise films are becoming longer and longer, it's refreshing to see a movie like 'Evil Dead Rise' opt for a shorter runtime. Fans of the series can expect yet another gore-filled and action-packed ride based on the trailer, so it's sure to be worth the watch.
