Calls grow to replace Evangeline Lilly in MCU after actress supports Ottawa truckers

'We don’t need more of this,' says user after actress implores Justin Trudeau to 'sit with' protestors and 'listen to what they have to say'

Back in January 2022, a large and very vocal group of Marvel fans called for actress Evangeline Lilly to be booted from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after she attended an anti-vax rally in Washington DC. "Was pro-choice before COVID and I am still pro-choice today," she wrote in Instagram where she put up photos from that event.

That particular event was already drawing widespread criticism even before Lilly's involvement after Robert F Kennedy Jr compared vaccine mandates to Anne Frank's situation during the Holocaust. Interestingly, it wasn't the first time Lilly came under fire for her views on the pandemic. Back in March 2020, she dismissed Covid-19 as a "respiratory flu" and refused to isolate. Such views have naturally not gone down well with Marvel fans, especially given that Lilly plays scientific genius Hope Van Dyne in the series.

Lilly is now scheduled to return for 'Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania', which is set to release in 2023. The movie has already wrapped shooting so there's no doubt we'll see her there, but beyond that, fans want her recast after her latest comments - this time about the trucker protests in Canada.

'Listen' Lilly tells Trudeau

The actress' latest controversy stemmed from an Instagram video uploaded on February 18, 2022. Bridge City News shared Lilly's comments as part of its ongoing coverage of the Freedom Convoy protests. "I want to speak to you today about your current approach to and current treatment of our fellow Canadians who are protesting your federal vaccine mandates," she begins. She then asks the Canadian Prime Minister, "Why won’t you sit with them?"

"If you’re so convinced of your own reasons for the mandates, sit down and walk the leaders of a group of 2.3 million protesters... and explain it to them and ask them to listen with open hearts and minds, and then reciprocate. Listen to what they have to say with a mind open to hearing things that might go against the ideas you are entrenched in," she said. At the time of reporting, the video has garnered over 15k likes and 232k views. It's being widely shared on not just Instagram, but also Facebook and Twitter as well. That is despite several inaccuracies, including the number of protestors which is not in the millions as Lilly claimed. So naturally social media users decided to weigh in again and reiterated calls for Lilly to be booted. 

'Evangeline Lilly has gone full crazy train'

"Pretty sure people care about Wasp more than Evangeline Lilly. Recast her. We don’t need more of this in the MCU fandom," one user tweeted. Another said, "Evangeline Lilly has gone full crazy train, making weeping videos over the Ottawa truckers. I'm definitely skipping Quantumania." A third condemned, "So Evangeline Lilly went straight from anti-vaccine mandates to defending swastika-waving a------s. That’s just great. I hope she remembers that freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from consequences."

"Can’t wait for marvel to announce Evangeline Lilly new replacement as the wasp," one person said. One user commented, "They should replace Evangeline Lilly as Wasp and not say anything or make a big deal about it. Maybe 90% of normies will not even notice." A third user joked, "Every time Evangeline Lilly opens her mouth I become more and more convinced that they killed her off in the next Ant-Man movie."
