'Dolittle': Mid-credits scene teases potential sequel although the good doctor may not actually return

Current projections suggest that the movie might end up as a flop so perhaps we may never get to see it get a sequel but there is always a chance, no matter how slim, that the good doctor might return to screens again

This article contains spoilers for the movie 'Dolittle'.

Robert Downey Jr's first movie after 'Avengers: Endgame' may not exactly be the rousing success we were hoping for but the movie does leave some room for a sequel. And keeping with the tradition of his 'Iron Man' movies, 'Dolittle' also has a mid-credits scene that sets up the future.

The short scene shows the film's main antagonist, Michael Sheen's Dr Blair Müdfly, lying in a cavern after falling into a hole while running from a dragon (yes, a dragon).

The scene shows the doctor trying to communicate with a bunch of bats so he can get their help to escape, only to have them wake up and seemingly attack him.

If a 'Dolittle 2' does happen, it will probably follow the return of Dr Müdfly as he tries to bring down his arch-enemy Dr John Dolittle (Robert Downey Jr.) but that's not the only thing a sequel could do.

Considering we never actually saw Lily Dolittle (Kasia Smutniak) die, there is always the possibility that she could come back into John's life in some way and that would probably make for a much more fun movie than 'Dolittle' itself.

To be absolutely honest, 'Dolittle' doesn't really rank among Downey Jr's best works but, that said, it's not as terrible as some would have you believe.

And while Dr. Dolittle might not be a superhero like Tony Stark, Downey Jr has revealed in a past interview that in many ways, he considers Dolittle to be the hero we need in the sort of world we live in, though he may not be the one we want.

"I felt myself living [at a time] where everybody just seemed to be screaming at each other across the aisle," the actor said in an interview with EW on January 14.

"I was like, here's a superhero, if you will, whose superpower is listening. His superhero superpower is empathy and I thought that'd be a great character to have today."

How well (or how badly) this empathetic superhero does at the box office still remains to be seen.

Current projections suggest that it probably won't be as big a hit as Downey Jr might hope so perhaps we may never get to see it get a sequel but there is always a chance, no matter how slim, that the good doctor might return to screens again.

'Dolittle' was released in theaters on January 17.
