'Disenchantment': The second part of season 1 will hopefully throw more light on Queen Dagmar's motives
Spoilers for the first part of the first season of 'Disenchantment'
We were never the one to assume that Abbi Jacobson's Princess Bean's mother Queen Dagmar (voiced by Sharon Horgan) was a nice lady.
For starters, her first few mentions were enough to plant a doubt in our mind. There was something fishy about her character. And King Zog's (voiced by John DiMaggio) dedication to her was almost akin to Stockholm Syndrome.
A Matt Groening ('The Simpsons' and 'Futurama') brainchild, 'Disenchantment' takes the audience to the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland, where we follow the misadventures of hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion Elfo, and her personal demon Luci. Along the way, the oddball trio encounters ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools.
The first season didn't answer many of our questions – where is Elfo from? If he isn't a true elf, who is he? Who is his mother? Who is the duo keeping a close watch on Princess Bean and her (mis)adventures in Dreamland? Why did Queen Dagmar want to poison King Zog? What is her story? Where has she taken Bean at the end of the first part?
But one of our burning questions is who exactly is Princess Dagmar.
Through her immediate family, we know she was a doting mother, a kind yet stern queen and her folks and subjects missed her. Why then did she try poisoning Zog?
We think that the Enchanter, Enchantress, and Queen Dagmar might be working. We know that Luci, voiced by Eric Andre, Bean's personal demon, is assigned to her by them.
If you've watched the show closely, it was revealed that Maru flooded Cremorrah with a potion to turn its inhabitants into stone. "Dagmar tried to turn Zog to stone, and flooded Dreamland with a potion that turned everyone to stone just like Maru did to Cremorrah. Since the only kingdoms we know of are Dreamland, Maru, Cremorrah, Bentwood, Elfwood, and Dankmire, it’s reasonable to assume Dagmar should be from – or at least working with – what remains of the Maru empire," explains Reddit user 'FencingFemmeFatale '.
This theory sums up that Queen Dagmar has ulterior motives – what, why and since when she is working on these, still remains under wraps. And there could be possible explanations in the second part of the first season.
The first season of the adult animated show is currently streaming on Netflix. The second part will be releasing on September 20, 2019.
