SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: Colorism is unfortunately rampant in most of Asia and South Korea is no different. In fact when international fans voiced their concerns about the colorist remarks made on the global Netflix dating show 'Single's Inferno', Korean viewers did not find anything wrong with it. In a social experiment, only once they were educated, did the Korean participants understand the harmful implications of colorism. And so while fans understood why Loona's Jinsoul made some skin-whitening remarks, they are still disappointed.

There have been several K-pop idols who have made colorist jokes or remarks like Itzy, GOT The Beat and NCT Dream members. Loona's Jinsoul became the latest idol to talk about wanting whiter skin. But with Loona recently going on a world tour and meeting thousands of fans of different ethnicities, fans were disappointed that she had not changed her mindset or atleast been careful before voicing her thoughts on a global platform where international fans are also present.

Loona's Jinsoul makes colorist remarks

While Jinsoul mostly prefers blonde hair, she decided to dye her hair black. But she did not like how tanned her skin looked in comparison, to which a Korean fan suggested on the messaging app FAB, "If you do white tanning, [pale skin] should return." In response, Jinsoul said, "I tried searching white tanning, skin whitening injections and glutathione tablets. But I'm just gonna trust that [pale skin] will come back whenever and do my makeup well instead." The fan then said, "But how pretty is it that Jinsoul's refreshing features contrast with her white skin?" Jinsoul then replied, "I don't have white skin though,,, since this tour I've tanned a lot...So I thought if I dyed my hair black I would look pale right? I was excited but it doesn't."

'Very disappointed'

One wrote, "Idk abt yall but im very disappointed in jinsoul like thats just not okay. shes a grown woman the majority of her fans are overseas and poc she should know better. sure it was a mistake and she just wasnt thinking since THOSE F**K A** HANBITS brought it up but idc she couldve -." Another fan said, "The hanbit and jinsoul are BOTH in the wrong ik korea is about being pale and shit but its not right just because you were taught that all your life doesnt mean its right plus shes grown ? this goes towards anyone not just because shes a idol and has a audience listening to her."

One fan wrote, "Kpop stans need to stop treating these grown ass adults like children. jinsoul f**ked up and should’ve known better.. specially since loonas brand is about embracing diversity." Another fan posted, "Now jinsoul… all ima say is she can think whatever she want bout herself but ain’t nobody ask her to post this on a platform for her diverse fanbase to see." One fan tweeted, "Yes korean society and the colorism that's rampant throughout it has likely conditioned jinsoul to feel that way about tanned skin but you would think she would be smart enough to just . not broadcast this to her fans."
