'Counting On': Justin Duggar, 17, announces his courtship with Claire, 19, fans ask 'isn’t that illegal?'
The season finale of the show saw Justin Duggar introducing Claire Spivey to his family. The announcement was made during the family conference call. The Duggars have found a way around the pandemic by regularly holding family video call where people have a chance to share if something new has happened in their life.
During this call, the family was surprised to see Justin join from another location. Without beating around the bush, Justin was quick to introduce Claire to the family. He revealed that they are courting after getting permission from Claire's family. The family was surprised but admitted that they were looking forward to welcoming Claire.
The Spivey and Duggars have known each other for a long time and it wasn't a shock that no one had any objections with the courtship. Even though the families have known each other for nearly two decades, it wasn't until 2019 that Claire and Justin met. He confessed that within a week, he knew Claire was the one for him.
However, he decided to wait for several months before going and asking for permission from Claire's father. Talking more about Claire, Justin revealed she is "sweet and nice", as well as, "outgoing". While the family invited Claire to come meet them soon, Ben Seewald thought it was tricky to start a relationship during a pandemic.
Keeping in mind that things were uncertain amid Covid-19, Ben thought things could get complicated in the relationship. However, Justin was quick to clear that air by stating they had figured things out. Even though they did not have a chance to go out for dinner or bowling, he was happy with how things were going.
While the family rejoiced, viewers were not pleased with the courtship announcement. Many thought that the pair was too young. "I’m sorry but 17 is a little bit too young to know what you really really want," wrote one user on Instagram. Another added, "17....and in a year marriage. Absolutely ridiculous. I’d have a heart attack if my son told me that."
"Hmm isn’t that illegal? She’s an adult he’s a. Child in law right?" asked another. "All their announcements is about pregnancy and relationships.. but nothing about you went to school and graduates some degree," another wrote.
While many think Claire and Justin might get married next year, the chances of it happening are relatively low. Some of the Duggars have waited for a couple of years before getting married. Justin's siblings have waited for nearly 3-4 years before walking down the aisle. Even though the two have announced their courtship, they might not get married so soon.
The season finale of 'Counting On' aired on September 22 at 9 pm ET on TLC.
