'Capone': Release date, plot, cast, trailer and all you need to know about Tom Hardy's gangster biopic
The final years of notorious gangster Al Capone are set to be the subject of a new movie starring Tom Hardy as the titular mobster. Originally titled 'Fonzo', the movie has been scripted and directed by Josh Trank and is being released by Vertical Entertainment and Redbox Entertainment.
Here’s everything you need to know about the project:
Release date
With theaters still closed as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, 'Capone' will be released on VOD on May 12 with a 48-hour rental. The movie's distributors reportedly still plan on releasing the film in theaters once they open up again.
Plot
Unlike most retellings of Capone's life, this movie won't be focusing on his years as America's most notorious gangster. Instead, the biopic will be taking a look at Capone's final years after his release from prison a decade after he was convicted of tax evasion.
Here's the synopsis for the movie according to IMDb: "The 47-year old Al Capone, after 10 years in prison, starts suffering from dementia and comes to be haunted by his violent past."
Cast
Tom Hardy
The 'Venom' actor will be taking on the role of Al Capone in the movie. He is joined on the cast by Linda Cardellini, Matt Dillon, Kyle MacLachlan, Kathrine Narducci, Jack Lowden, Noel Fisher and Tilda Del Toro.
Director
Josh Trank
The 36-year-old filmmaker is best known for having directed the 2012 found-footage superhero movie 'Chronicle' and the 2015 'Fantastic Four' movie. This is actually Trank's first time in the director's chair since 'Fantastic Four', which reportedly caused a schism between Trank and studio 20th Century Fox over reshoots and final cut privileges. Trank actively bashed the movie and it ultimately tanked at the box office but he's been out of the game ever since and Trank will probably be looking at this movie as his chance to make a comeback. Trank also wrote the script for 'Capone'
Trailer
A trailer for the upcoming movie was released on April 15 and it introduces all the major players in this biographical drama, with Tom Hardy's Al Capone at the heart of it all. It looks like this is going to be a pretty interesting take on the life of one of America's most infamous personalities with just enough action to make it feel like a classic gangster movie.
