Cannes 2023: From 'Killers of the Flower Moon' to 'Asteroid City', a look at festival's line-up
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The coveted Cannes Film Festival has announced the official lineup for its 76th edition which features titles from some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. Some films scheduled to premiere at the prestigious event are highly anticipated blockbusters like Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and James Mangold’s ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’. On the other hand, Johnny Depp’s upcoming movie ‘Jeanne du Barry’ will be the opening film of this year’s festival.
According to the festival, a total of 19 movies will be competing for the top prize Palme d’Or this time around. Filmmakers such as Wes Anderson (‘Asteroid City’), Nuri Bilge Ceylan (‘About Dry Grasses’), Jonathan Glazer (‘The Zone of Interest’), Ken Loach (‘The Old Oak’), Nanni Moretti (‘Il Sol dell’Avvenire’), and Wim Wenders (‘Perfect Days’) will be showcasing their movies at this year’s event and competing for the top prize.

The festival also broke the record by having six movies from female filmmakers in the official competition lineup, including new movies from directors like Catherine Breillat, Alice Rohrwacher, and Jessica Hausner.
On the other hand, films like ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ will not be competing for the top prize but will have their premieres during the event. ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ is based on the novel of the same name by David Grann and takes place in 1920s Oklahoma. It depicts a string of brutal murders of Osage Nation Native Americans, which came to be known as the Reign of Terror. The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jesse Plemons, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Brendan Fraser, and John Lithgow.
Also, ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ takes the “blockbuster spot” at this year’s festival. The movie sees Harrison Ford reprising the role of the iconic archaeologist and also features Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mads Mikkelsen in pivotal roles.
Cannes Film Festival is one of the biggest film festivals in the world which previews new films of all genres, including documentaries, from all around the world. It is one of the “Big Three” major European film festivals, alongside Venice Film Festival in Italy, and the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany.
