'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Season 7 first look shows Holt demoted to street cop, squad grapples with Terry as leader
Are you ready for more “shenanigoogles”? Because the teaser for season 7 of the police comedy ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ promises just that!
The first look for the season that dropped on January 29 has a lot going for it. The show will take off right where it left things at the end of season 6.
A little recap: The season began with Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) as a married couple -- they got hitched at the end of season 5. Everyone at the precinct was waiting to hear if Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher) had become the new commissioner. Unfortunately, he lost the position to John Kelly (Phil Reeves). For a while, Holt sank into a deep depression and it required Santiago to snap him out of it.
He begins standing up to Kelly when it becomes clear that all his policies were regressive and counter-productive, but it does not result in much except earning Kelly’s wrath. Gina, meanwhile, quit her job to become a celebrity, while Santiago and Peralta debated on whether or not they should have children.
Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews) passed the Lieutenant's Exam and unexpectedly won the Cinco de Mayo Heist previously known as the Halloween Heist. The season ended with Peralta forming a suicide squad of sorts with some of their old rivals to expose Kelly’s crimes. While it backfired a little in the beginning, in the end, they were able to take him down.
So what do we see in the first look?
The cast members inform that Madeline Wuntch (Kyra Sedgwick), the temporary Commissioner of the NYPD, demotes Holt to a beat cop. “The fact is that he’s still captain to us, but it’s such a different position for him,” Crews says. With Holt on the streets, Terry is forced to step up at the precinct. “The rest of the squad is learning how to relate to Lieutenant Terry Jeffords running the show,” adds Joe Lo Truglio, who plays Charles Boyle on the show, who has apparently taken up boxing as a hobby this season.
Holt obviously will not be taking this demotion well. From the preview, it is visible that he is going through something of an identity crisis. Because of his demotion, Holt tells Peralta that he has even lost the respect of his beloved dog Cheddar, “Now, he only poops for Kevin.”
Samberg promises that this season will see more “shenanigoogles” and more “rumblin’ and tumblin’.”
Season 7 of ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ returns on Thursday, February 6, at 8/7c.
