Spoilers for 'Britannia' Season 2 Episode 6

It appears as though everything that happens on 'Britannia' was always meant to happen – the will of the Gods, if you may. Is it so, though? Or is it the will of the Druids, who play with the lives of those who live to walk these mysterious lands? Episode 6 of Season 2 of 'Britannia' just goes another way into proving just that.

It's been a hot minute since we saw Brutus (Daniel Caltagirone) and Philo (Zaqi Ismail) together on the screen. After deserting the Roman Army, the two are blissfully happy indulging themselves with the many (drug-related) exploits of this new land. In this episode, they are wandering around to nowhere particularly when they stumble upon a Roman camp. Shocked at first, they hide but then soon are struck with an idea - let's get the entire camp high! They add mushrooms to the water supply of the camp and nearly all the soldiers barring a handful are drugged.

This is taken advantage of by Harka (Mackenzie Crook) who sends his army of Druids to attack the camp. With the soldiers on drugs, it takes the Druids, who are led by Regni Ania (Liana Cornell) no time to win over. And off go heads flying into the Devni backyard - a message to Veran (also played by Crook) of The Dead Man's return.

There's also something interesting brewing in the Devni tribe. Amena (Annabel Scholey) is sent by Aulus (David Morrissey) to influence her sister Andhra, the Queen, played by Samantha Colley). But her own sister arrests her in the previous episode after Veran tells her all about who really makes Amena queen of the Cantii.

Following this, Amena is locked shut in what looks like a very high-security chamber. She is refused access to anything and anyone is should get ready to be skinned and burnt - the God's will so. But she demands to speak to Veran, and she knows he won't deny. Later, they talk about her heart and why he took it away from her - her heart that hides deep dark secrets about her past, secrets that are linked for the tribe, and everything that they deem holy. It is still not made clear what is going on.

Only later to be revealed that Amena actually has a horrible past. Honestly, no wonder she's been behaving the way she has all the time that we know her. As it turns out, Amena was raped as a young girl. She got pregnant but this was hidden from the tribe. All along, her mother knew but did nothing about it by claiming it was the will of the gods. Amena was locked away until the child was born in secrecy and raised as her mother's daughter, Amena's sister. They named the baby Andra. As an infant, a druid took Andra away and Amena was sent away to marry Phelan (Julian Rhind-Tutt). And we are (vaguely aware) of the following events.

Pretty heartbreaking stuff! We deemed Amena an ambitious psychopath throughout the two seasons. But now, with this insight into her character, it becomes clear. Whether she will get her heart back is unknown, but Harka's army is nearby and the "dark has come".

'Britannia' airs on Epix on Sundays at 9/ 8c.
