'Britannia' Season 2 Episode 2 Review: Falls short of exploring talented actors by focusing on the unimportant
Spoilers for 'Britannia' Season 2 Episode 2
Cait (Eleanor Worthington-Cox) is alive and well. And by the looks of it, Divis is still is high spirits as ehe trains her to bring the prophecy to fulfillment. A lot of other people are also looking for Cait – Veran and his twin brother Harka (both played brilliantly by Mackenzie Crook), Aulus (David Morrissey) from the Romans. But Divis has done a rather commendable job is hiding her from everyone else at Britannia - in a cave behind a waterfall.
In episode 2, we see the story taken forward via the rest of the characters of the show. It also offers a glimpse into the resistance that is being formed against the Romans by the Droids.
Phelan (Julian Rhind-Tutt) had fled to the North following the tragic death of his sister Kerra (Kelly Reilly). He believes they are safe here at least for a while before the Romans arrive for their conquests. And it is here, when goes to a neighbouring market, where he sees a show that would shock him to his core.
We see Queen Antedia (Zoë Wanamaker) back in series but she is captured and being auctioned for a handful of silver pennies. She is being humiliated following her 'breaking bread with the Romans'. At the same time, Kerra's decapitated head is also being auctioned - money that Phelan buys her with came from his business at the auction.
It is here that the episode ruins all its potential by just trying to leave a mark on its audience. There are more important events that are taking place in Britannia but the episode wastes a good deal of time focusing on the bare minimum. Phelan's appearance on the show is welcome but did we need to see the torturous bit? Probably not. We'd have liked to see more of the Droid resistance and the unrest that is brewing within the group itself.
As Veran continues to gather power and people against the Romans, there are those who doubt him and his intentions. While he can easily shut them up, it still leaves a mark on the rest of the Droids. 'Britannia' boasts of a topnotch talented cast but doesn't do enough to explore the potential they bring to the table. Compared to the previous episode, one would deem it better because we got to see a lot more than just the Romans.
'Britannia' airs on Epix on Sundays at 9/8c.
