'Bridge And Tunnel': How the Epix show got its title, here's what the term actually means

Epix's latest show 'Bridge and Tunnel' is all set to release on January 24. The show revolves around a group of recent college graduates ready to pursue their dreams in Manhattan while still unwilling to leave the familiarity of their working-class Long Island hometown. The official synopsis reads: "Written, directed and produced by Edward Burns, this dramedy series set in 1980 revolves around a group of college grads setting out to pursue their dreams in Manhattan while still clinging to the familiarity of their working-class Long Island home town." Erica Hernandez has joined the cast in a recurring role. Hernandez will play Genie, the fun-loving and sassy sister of Jimmy (Sam Vartholomeos). She and her best friend Lizzie (Barrett Wilbert Weed) have dreams of making it big with their all-girl punk band, Wildfire.

The series’ ensemble cast includes Sam Vartholomeos ('Star Trek: Discovery'), Caitlin Stasey ('Reign, Please Like Me'), Gigi Zumbado ('9-1-1', 'Criminal Minds'), 'JanLuis Castellanos ('13 Reasons Why', Marvel’s 'The Runways'), Brian Muller ('The Deuce', 'Madame Secretary') and Isabella Farrell ('The Good Fight').
 
The series was earlier titled 'Gibston Station'. Though there's no explanation as to why the show has been called 'Bridge And Tunnel', one can only make assumptions after a little research on their own. 'Bridge And Tunnel' is a term that is often used pejoratively to describe people who live in communities surrounding the island of Manhattan in New York City, and commute to it for work or entertainment. Going by the synopsis, this means that for the group of college-goers, they struggle to get used to the world of Manhattan and 'the bridge and tunnel' aspect of it. Bridge and Tunnel seems symbolic of the real world that the teenagers have to face, and it also appears to be a metaphor for their lives, as the two seem to be at the opposite end of the spectrum. They struggle to get used to this new 'adult' world and the responsibilities that come along with it. 

Probably as the show airs, we might get to understand better what it all means for them. The series has been written, directed and produced by Edward Burns. The series is also executive produced by Aaron Lubin. Tune in on January 24 at 9 pm ET, Epix.
