'Breeders' Episode 9 Review: With Luke falling sick, are we heading towards a tragic finale?
With Luke falling severely sick, it changes the mood of the entire story and what seemed like a hilarious and quirky take on parenting is taking an emotional turn. Ally (Daisy Haggard) has moved to Berlin with a new project and this has disrupted the entire family dynamics. The kids are being impossible again with Paul (Martin Freeman) and he is out of sorts.
From enduring the long-distance relationship with Ally, but mostly her absence as a mother, to managing the kids who are missing their mother, it has been a tough time for Paul. But things really go out of hands as Luke (George Wakeman) suddenly falls sick. It is quite normal, you would think, for a child to catch a fever or throw up. And knowing what we know of Luke, the child is highly prone to accidents and illnesses. But this is different and way beyond anything that we had seen or even his parents had expected.
Luke’s fever turns quite serious, so much so that he passes out and is taken to the hospital. Paul is worried sick, especially now that he is alone and Ally is not there yet. Back in Berlin, Ally is trying to find a solution to this new arrangement, which clearly is taking a toll on her family life, her children and her husband. The news of Luke’s sickness perhaps comes as a wake-up call.
Paul finally feels that he has lost his control over things that he is supposed to be responsible for. He feels that it is his fault that he took Luke outside while he had a meeting for a prospective job and that pushed his son over the edge.
At this point, we also learn an interesting thing about Paul and his father’s relationship. So far, we have seen Jim (Alun Armstrong) being detached and a lot less emotional towards his son and keeps things very matter-of-fact between them. But with Luke in the hospital (under observation), it probably makes Jim realize his emotions for his son. He talks about his feelings while babysitting Ava (Jayda Eyles) and that’s when we learn that he does love his son, he just never knew what or how to express.
The current scenario of the Worsleys, as it stands, could lead anywhere in the upcoming final episode. ‘No Cure’ Part 1 is an episode of realization for everyone and we can expect things to take a big turn. Luke could become the catalyst of such a change but will he also become the collateral damage? Could it be a tragic end to this chapter of Paul and Ally’s life? We hope not. But we can say for sure that this situation will pave the way for better judgment and decisions in the future.
The second part of the two-part finale of ‘Breeders’ will air on Monday, April 27, 2020, 10pm/9, only on FX.
