Danish political drama 'Borgen' is one of the most acclaimed television series out there belonging to the genre. Famously described as "the best TV show you have never seen", 'Borgen' is about a prime minister's rise to power and how power changes the politician.

The series follows Birgitte Nyborg Christensen, who against all odds becomes the first female Prime Minister of Denmark. The series won the Best International TV series at the 2012 British Academy Television Awards, and the Peabody Award in 2013 for Area of Excellence. Sidse Babett Knudsen's performance was nominated for an International Emmy Award for Best Performance by an Actress in 2012. Over the years, 'Borgen' also earned itself a following across the world as it was broadcast in most European countries, as well as in the US, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Netflix has now teamed up with DR, the Danish public broadcaster, to revive the show for a new fourth season. Bringing together the original creative team (from cast to creators), Season 4 is expected in 2022. Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming series:

Release date

The official release date for Season 4 of 'Borgen' is not out yet but is it set to premiere in 2022 on Danish broadcaster DR before dropping on Netflix internationally. We will update this article when more information is made available. Meanwhile, the highly indulgent first three seasons will arrive on Netflix on September 1, 2020. 

Plot

According to latest reports, "The new season follows Nyborg in her role as Foreign Minister, as well as her staff and the media tasked with covering her. Fønsmark was her head of press, but returns to journalism in the new season."

Cast

Knudsen plays the role of the fictional Danish Prime Minister Birgitte, the character is sometimes believed to be based on Denmark's first female prime minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt. She received international recognition for the leading role in 'Borgen' and as Theresa Cullen in the HBO science fiction-Western television series 'Westworld'. The actress is also known for her work in the improvisational comedy 'Let's Get Lost', which was also her debut on television. For this, she received both the Robert and Bodil awards for Best Actress.

Katrine was Birgitte's campaign manager in Season 3 but is expected to return to journalism in Season 4. Sørensen's performance as Katrine was her breakthrough role on television. The actress has been nominated for three Robert Awards and one Bodil Award. She is also known for her work in 'Midsomer Murders', 'Vinyl', 'Flashback' and 'Greyzone'. 

Pilou Asbæk as Kasper Juul

After his role as the troubled spin doctor Kasper Juul on 'Borgen', Asbæk is best known for playing Euron Greyjoy in 'Game of Thrones'. He is also known for '1864', 'A Hijacking' and 'Sex, Drugs & Taxation'.

Creators

Season 4 of 'Borgen' brings back its original creative team, particularly creator Adam Price. The show will be executive produced by Meta Louise Foldager Sørensen, and Stine Meldgaard Madsen will serve as the producer.

Price was the co-writer and developer of the first run of the series along with Jeppe Gjervig Gram and Tobias Lindholm. The screenwriter, playwright, and restaurateur, Price is known for 'Taxa' and 'Ride Upon the Storm'. He has written a number of plays and musicals for theatre, most recent project being the critically acclaimed 'A Conversation Before Death'.

Where to watch

Although official dates are yet to be announced, Season 4 of 'Borgen' will be arriving on Netflix, and according to reports, it is to premiere in 2022 on DR before dropping on the streaming site internationally. The first three seasons arrive on Netflix on September 1, 2020.
