'Bargain Mansions': Tamara creates magic by using black detailing, stunning lights to renovate colonial house
On the December 7 episode of ‘Bargain Mansions’, Tamara Day picks a 1964 colonial house spread across 2,300 square feet. The demo on the house was halfway through but the renovation was interrupted for some reason and Tamara bought the house for $247,000. She set aside a $15,000 renovation budget and after completion of the Phase 1 renovation, Tamara was ready to renovate the second phase of the house.
Tamara’s idea for the house renovation was to infuse contemporary design with a touch of charm. She transformed the disconnected exterior of the house into stunning symmetry giving it a new appearance. Inside the house the lifeless living room was bought back to life with stunning lights. The kitchen, study and dining room was lacklustre, Tamara and her team turned it into an amazing space with beautiful fixtures and breathtaking views.
On the second level of the building, Tamara decided to put a walk-in closet outside the bedroom, adjoining the washroom. For the washroom, Tamara went for texture, she put penny tiles on the floor and larger tiles with polka dot effect on the walls. She built an adjoining vanity to the washroom and painted the walls pink to brighten it up. Originally, the main bedroom had no character appeal, she painted the frames of the windows black from white and added wallpaper on the back wall. The black detailing with the natural tone of the house made a great statement. Lighting always dresses up a room so Tamara added beautiful pendant lights left and right of the bed, with the window at the center. With all the natural lights, the room was well lit, airy and cozy.
Tamara decided not to change the placement of the washroom that was originally laid out during the demo since it was spacious and drew in a lot of light. A floating tub was inserted into the washroom with it’s separate standalone space. Around the corner was the gorgeous shower with tiles on the walls. She put two separate was basins with vanity each side of the door with beautiful light fixtures hanging on top of it. The main closet was a small space but Tamara was able to install some cabinets, making it look more organised. The window in the master closet was wrapped in a leather frame.
Potential buyers who came to the open house instantly fell in love with the house. Catch all the new episodes of 'Bargain Mansions' on HGTV every Monday at 9/8c. For more information, check your local listings.
