Major spoilers for 'Away'

Netflix's drama set in space, 'Away', is a story about (yet another one of) Earth's attempts to reach out to Mars. The mission is largely sponsored by the US. However, other countries have sent experts in different fields for this endeavor that is going to be a benchmark for the advancement of science and humanity.

Hilary Swank's Emma Green is an American astronaut who must leave her husband and teenage daughter behind in order to command an international space crew and embark on a treacherous, three-year-long mission to Mars. She is accompanied by Kwesi (Ato Essandoh), Misha (Mark Ivanir), Ram (Ray Panthaki) and Lu (Vivian Wu). Over the course of the ten episodes of Season 1, they must overcome several hurdles, both external (from space) and internal (from inside the spaceship). As months go by, the journey to space becomes more and more dangerous till finally it is left to the finale to answer the question of whether the Atlas will land.

Ram (L) falls for his space-ship commander Emma (Netflix)

After the tense landing of Pegasus, Emma's crew is given the choice to perish trying to land or return to Earth. They successfully manage to steer clear of this because of Lu's presence of mind. There is so much that could have gone wrong during the final landing of the Atlas on Mars leading to the deaths of all the astronauts on board. But the Netflix series incorporates a healthy dose of clichés and rest assured, the endeavor that earth has embarked upon will be successful.

In the end, it is their morals that ensure the crew land on the red planet. 'Away' runs high on drama and does not shy away from going all the way. The finale episode essentially focuses on how far the characters have come from where they started — and not just in terms of the journey to Mars. Alexis (Talitha Bateman) learns to share with her father Matt Logan (Josh Charles). She also continues her relationship with Isaac Rodriguez (Adam Irigoyen) with complete permission from her father.

Back in space, as the crew successfully manages to land on Mars, they also discover that Pegasus has also landed. Now they are going to build a base on Mars for further research.

If the streaming site does consider a Season 2, it might comprise of the crew members' mission back to earth. But having exhausted all the clichés in Season 1, will the show even get the chance at a renewal? At almost every point, 'Away' underestimated its audience and that is not something that viewers today appreciate. Not when they've been shut at home for months with ample time to catch up with banality.

Mei (L) and Lu (Netflix)

There are also several other open-ended questions following the landing on Mars. Ram had confessed his feelings for Emma and now they're going to be on Mars for the next three years. How will this play out? Lu has left behind the love of her life Mei Chen (Nadia Hatta) back in China. And although she tries to reinstate Mei following her demotion, it doesn't work out in the most expected manner. They had promised reconciliation upon return to Earth but will that happen?

Back on earth, Melissa Ramirez (Monique Curnen) had also confessed her feelings for Matt. And while they had left it to not be discussed anymore, is there a possibility that over the course of three years, things will change?
