One year without ‘Anne With An E’: What to expect from Anne and Diana's love stories when Season 4 returns?
Mesmerizing dialogues and heartwarming bonds make ‘Anne With An E’ one of the most beloved shows. It's no surprise that fans were in for a rude shock when CBC and Netflix canceled the show after season three. After it ended, Alici Rengifo said, “It's a shame this show has to leave, it has a classic style that harkens back to books like ‘Little Women’ while updating the tone for contemporary viewers who could have a lot of fun while taking in a few life lessons along the way. Anne will be missed, hopefully, she'll have heirs.”
Based on Lucy Maud Montgomery's 1908 classic children's books, ‘Anne of Green Gables’, the series ended with Anne Shirley-Cuthbert (Amybeth McNulty) saying goodbye to Green Gables and beginning a new life at Queen’s College. In a major cliffhanger, Gilbert Blythe (Lucas Jade Zumann) called off his engagement to Winifred "Winnie" Rose (Ashleigh Stewart) and sent a love letter to Anne. As the final episode came to a close, Anne and Gilbert promised to write to each other often. Even after that touching end, one question remains on many minds: Will Anne and Gilbert ever reunite and will they stay together forever?
Despite several protests and the campaign #SaveAnnewithanE that crossed two million tweets, there doesn't seem to be an update from the makers. Nonetheless, fans haven't lost hope and trended "ONE YEAR WITHOUT ANNE" with a string of old photos and umpteen reasons why the show deserves to be back. With all the demand, is there a chance for the showrunners to renew the series with a new season?
Begging Netflix to renew the series, one fan posted, “We’re just a fandom standing in front of a streaming giant asking you to renew the show,” and another wrote, “Don't give up hope kindreds! Although a year has passed, I still believe the show will be renewed.” A third pointed out, “1.4 million signatures for the renewal of this amazing and extraordinary series. The characters taught us so much, and they had lots to teach us still ONE YEAR WITHOUT ANNE!”
Alan Levinovitz, an assistant professor at James Madison University, wrote, “For those of you wondering why ONE YEAR WITHOUT ANNE is trending, get off Twitter *immediately* and go watch the show. Do you have kid(s) 7+? Watch it with them! And then come back here and thank me if you're not just binge-watching all three seasons.” Another Twitter user posted, “So happy ONE YEAR WITHOUT ANNE is trending on Twitter, I just rewatched the series and it's such an amazing show, still upset it was canceled but WE NEED A SEASON 4!!”
Talking about what fans need to know, one tweet read, “How do you think Gilbert would propose to Anne (or vice versa, of course)?” Another tweet said, “Do you think jerry should end up with Diana in a possible s4?” Another fan wrote, “Her story was not finished. she deserves the happy ending the rest of the characters got.”

Not just fans, stars from the show were equally surprised when it was canceled. In an exclusive interview with MEAWW, Dalila Bela who plays Diana Barry on the show confessed she didn't expect that too.
“While we were filming the season, I wasn't aware that it was going to be canceled. I actually don't know much about why it was canceled. But the fan's reaction has been incredibly sweet. All their efforts and all the billboards they have set up in Toronto and New York to try and get 'Anne [with an E]' renewed. It's really beautiful. I guess I was a little shocked when the news was released. On the one hand, it was four years of my life I had spent on this show and I was not going to do another season but also I am excited by the new prospects on the horizon. So it's bittersweet.”
Talking about her relationship with Jerry on the show, she said, “The relationship is both very complicated and very simple because throughout her life Diana has been very restricted and she hasn't had much chance for freedom. Jerry represented that. Jerry was able to give her that freedom. She could laugh as loud as she wanted, she could dance with wild abandon, she could chew with her mouth open. She didn't have to be this proper, prim princess that her parents were grooming her to be... While she liked him well enough, it wasn't love. She was in love with the freedom that he gave her. So their relationship came to a rather painful end.”
