Award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay will be producing a two-part documentary series for PBS titled,  'And She Could Be Next'. The docuseries features women of color who are transforming American politics.

"If ever there was a moment where we need to be reminded of the leadership of women of color, that time is now," DuVernay said. "If you're an immigrant, a young person, a person of faith, or simply someone who has felt unseen for too long, you will find yourself reflected in this story."

Release date

There is no release date set for the docuseries but it is likely to premiere in June, according to reports.

Plot

According to the official synopsis of 'And She Could Be Next', the docuseries "tells the story of a defiant movement of women of color who are transforming American politics from the ground up."

"The documentary series, filmed from 2018 through 2019 by a team of women filmmakers of color, follows forward-thinking candidates and organizers across the country, asking whether democracy itself can be preserved - and made stronger - by those most marginalized."

"The episodes center on individuals at the heart of the movement behind the New American Majority, including Bushra Amiwala (Skokie, IL) - a school board member and the youngest Muslim elected official in the US,  Stacey Abrams (Georgia), a former Georgia House speaker and gubernatorial candidate, Maria Elena Durazo (Los Angeles, CA), Veronica Escobar (El Paso, TX), Lucy McBath (Atlanta, GA), Rashida Tlaib (Detroit, MI) and Nse Ufot, executive director of the New Georgia Project."

Creators

The project is produced by Peabody Awardee Grace Lee, Iranian documentary filmmaker Marjan Safinia, and Jyoti Sarda. Lee and Safinia also serve as directors.

DuVernay is the executive producer alongside Justine Nagan and Chris White. In addition to Lee and Safinia, field directors include Yoruba Richen, Geeta Gandbhir, Amber Fares, Deborah Esquenazi, Ramona Emerson and Anayansi Prado.

The powerful trailer for 'And She Could Be Next' sheds light on the importance of representation in the American political system. Additionally,  it also highlights the urgency of the moment to shed prejudices against women of color. Why, you ask? Because the future is female.

"This series brings passion, energy and hope in our uncertain times," Nagan said. "Supporting this project meant a chance to highlight the work of the bold women of color on the front lines in this country, as well as those behind the camera."

Where to watch

The docuseries doesn't have a release date as of yet but is likely to stream on PBS in June. We will update this article when the release date is announced.
