‘American Idol’ fans declare Emmy Russell ‘can’t sing’, demand singer’s elimination from show

Emmy Russell is one of the top 7 contestants of 'American Idol' Season 22

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'American Idol' Season 22 fans ridiculed Emmy Russell, claiming she lacked singing ability and demanded her elimination from the ABC show. Viewers mocked her vocals, stating that sometimes she sounded like a "dying cat", while other times, they likened her voice to that of a cartoon character.

Many argued that she couldn't sing and shouldn't have advanced this far in the competition, while there were other much deserving contestants who got eliminated from the show. 

"i’m sorry i can’t stay silent anymore, who keeps voting for jack blocker and emmy… over kb??? be fr," said one user. "America got it so wrong! Emmy and Tristan should not have made it through over the others," said another. "How do Tristan and Emmy beat Kabrienne and McKenna… #AmericanIdol These voters have to be the same people who voted for Biden," added one. "Emmy can't fucking carry a tune. This shit is ridiculous," added another. 

"Emmy is going to make the Top 3 based only on the fact that her grandma is who she is... and that is so unfair to the contestants who deserve to be there," added one. "Emmy is riding a grandma wave of BS she can’t sing and sounds like a dying cat," added another. "Emmys voice irks me so much she’s an adorable person but it feels like a cartoon singing every time and I just can’t," said one. "emmy needs to go tonight. ive had enough," said another. "I’m sorry but emmy cannot sing. she sounds like she’s drowning," added another. 

Emmy Russell pairs up with Jack Blocker

Throughout the night, the 'American idol' contestants paired up for fun performances of the judges' songs. The first collaboration was Emmy Russell and Jack Blocker singing "Hello" by Lionel. The judge ran up on stage to hug them before stating, "I win! Let's go home." He followed it up by saying Emmy and Jack made a "perfect combination."

Jack Blocker chose to perform "Always On My Mind" by Willie Nelson, a departure from his usual style as he sang without his guitar, which was uncommon for him. Katy Perry was visibly moved to tears after Jack's performance. "I cried because I was so emotional. I felt like you had fully realized yourself," Katy said, her voice choked with emotion.

"If you kept singing like that, you were going to surprise everyone," she added.

Lionel Richie says 'American loves' Emmy Russell

Despite criticism from viewers, the 'American Idol' judges heaped praise on Emmy Russell's performance. Lionel Richie was particularly impressed by her "storyteller" voice, saying it made him smile throughout. Katy Perry applauded her song choice, calling it her best of the season vocally. "It was so you - and that's why we love you, that's why America loves you," Lionel said to Emmy.

Luke Bryan noted a newfound freedom and confidence in Emmy's performance, suggesting growth in her stage presence. Overall, they assured Emmy that her authenticity is what makes her beloved by both the judges and the American audience.

'American Idol' Season 22 airs on Sundays and Mondays at 8 pm ET on ABC.
