Who is Serrin Joy?

Serrin Joy is originally from Akron, Ohio, and she has been spotted in a number of ‘American Idol’ promos released on social media. Interestingly, the versatile crooner hails from a musical family. Serrin is a church singer and all her siblings play instruments. Her parents are ministers of music at church.

Shedding light on her years of growing up she revealed that she struggled a lot with self-confidence. In an interview with the publication Voyage LA, she said, “Growing up, I used to struggle a lot with self-confidence whether it was my own viewpoint on my appearance or just showcasing my voice in general.” She further said, “I just didn’t think anyone would ever want to view me as a public figure. As I got into high school, I experienced people whom I remember would doubt me and told me I should settle for being a school music teacher, which there’s nothing wrong with that, but I wanted more.” According to the website Talent Recap, she was also featured in a news segment of Cleveland 19 News where she shed light on the connection between music and church. “I’ve always been at church rehearsal and at choir rehearsal and as soon as I was old enough to start singing for myself I just joined in and it’s something I’ve always done.”

What inspired her to pursue a career in music?

Just like a lot of children, even Serrin had a special place in her heart for Disney Channel and other channels such as Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and the stars on the show inspired her to take up music full-time. Speaking to the same publication, she revealed, “I grew up watching a lot of television (Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network) and the stars on the shows inspired me to want to become a recording artist and to act, especially the Cheetah Girls.”

She continued, “I also listened to a lot of Motown artists and I’ve just always loved the live instrumentals and the groove that the music provides.” She added, “My parents saw the creator in me at a young age and so ever since the 4th grade, I’ve been attending performing arts schools such as Miller South VPA, Firestone: Akron School for the Arts and now the American Musical Dramatic Academy.”
