'Altered Carbon' Season 2: Quellcrist Falconer's return from the dead may be biggest mystery of the new season

Season 2 of 'Altered Carbon' is just around the corner and while we're very excited to see what the new season will bring to the cyber-noir action series, it looks like there is going to be some very confusing things going on in the upcoming season. And at the top of that list is the return of Quellcrist Falconer (Renée Elise Goldsberry).

The trailer for Season 2 released online by Netflix on February 11 reveals that the revolutionary leader will be returning from the dead in the season. What it doesn't reveal is how she made her return and that's the biggest mystery of the season.

At the end of Season 1, it was revealed that Reileen Kawahara (Dichen Lachman) had hidden away a copy of Quellcrist's DHF (Digital Human Freight), essentially a digital backup of Falconer's mind. This could have something to do with how the revolutionary managed to return from the dead but there are other possibilities.

In the novels by Richard K Morgan, Quell survives her death when her body is destroyed by Angelfire, the destructive beams generated by the Orbitals that ring Harlan's World.  The rings were used as a planetary defense mechanism by the Elders, a civilization of aliens who used to inhabit the world long before humans arrived. It's possible the show might work something similar into this season but then again, considering how the series has generally been a very loose adaptation of the novels, there's no guarantee that this will be the case.

Of course, there's always the possibility that it isn't Quell who returns but just a clone of her with someone else riding the sleeve. Perhaps this could be some sort of Protectorate trick designed to trap Takeshi Kovacs (Anthony Mackie) by using his one true weakness: his undying love for Quell.

Whatever the actual reasons are, what we do know right now is that Quellcrist Falconer is back in the game. Whether that's for better or worse or if it even really is her, we'll only know once the season drops.

'Altered Carbon' Season 2 will be released on Netflix on February 27.
