'AGT' Season 17: Fans say South Korean acapella group Maytree has 'good vibes' as they make them nostalgic

Fans say they 'expected a bit more TVs shows instead of a tiny bit of a few' from Maytree as they put an acapella spin on nostalgic TV theme songs

Maytree, a South Korean acapella group, takes viewers down memory lane by performing all of the popular TV theme melodies as part of their audition. The acapella ensemble surprises everyone, including show host Terry Crews, with a backstage surprise.

S.I. (Jang Sang-in), the leader in charge of maintaining "vocal perfection," is joined by soprano Erika (Im Soo-yeon), alto Soo (Kang Su-gyeong), tenor Hoony (Kwon Yeong-hoon), and bass Kim Won-jong. Since its inception in 2000, the group has won a slew of international prizes, including first place in the Asian group category in an international acapella competition in Taiwan in 2010-11. Maytree achieved the Gold Diploma at Vokal.total, an annual international acapella competition in Graz, Austria, in 2012, demonstrating world-class abilities in the jazz and pop categories, and finished second in a 2018 international acapella festival in Moscow. Maytree toured the world until the COVID-19 pandemic struck. The group sought a new medium to connect with its audiences after being forced to cancel all of its scheduled performances.

The acapella ensemble enters the stage with their translator, who tells the judges a hilarious backstory about the group's creation. Apparently, the group's leader was kicked out of his former acapella group for being a lousy singer. To retaliate, he claims to have created Maytree, and now they are here! Revenge couldn't have looked sweeter as they sang some of the most memorable TV show themes while showcasing their vocal range. Their lineup featured the theme song from the long-running animated comedy series Simpsons, Sofia Vergara's 'Modern Family,' and Cheers, a dominant blockbuster television series that propelled NBC to the top of the ratings in the 1980s.

Everyone in the crowd, including Simon, gets to their feet as soon as their performance ends. He describes them as a clever group for having such a lineup, and he admits he wasn't expecting it. Heidi said she like it and remarked on how well they all blended together. She describes the group as "special." Sofia, on the other hand, thought the act to be much more serious due to the way they were dressed. Simon, who was taken aback by the performance, describes it as a "great audition." He claims that their audition would be remembered. Due to Howie's absence, the group leaves with "three" yeses. They even performed the 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' theme to end it on a high note and put Terry out of his misery.

Fans on social media went into a frenzy after the performance. A viewer tweeted: "I’m going retract everything I said last week about acapella…only for this group…cause they did theme songs for shows that I love. #AGT #MayTree."

Another tweet read:  "Maytree was amazing doing the tv theme songs acapella was amazing #AGT."

Their long-time fans also took out the moment and wrote: "Only watching #agt for maytree and I was mad sweating the entire time their songs on YouTube are amazing,, They’re well in sync and have good vibes."

A fan page felt they killed the audition: "OMG! #Maytree killed that audition !! #AGT #AGTAuditions."
