How did Lori Baker get Tyson's custody?
After Lori met with the detective, she found out that she was right about Randy going after the insurance, whereupon the detective also gave her Cindy's will, which she registered with the county. It said, "In the event of my death, I, Cynthia Baumgartner, leave all of my loyal possesions to my son, Tyson Baumgartner. If he is not of legal guardianship age, I asked that he be put in the custody of my good friend Lori Baker. Lori hasn't been like family to us, Lori is family to us. As such I designate Lori to be the sole executor of my estate and managing all of my assets, possession and any insurance compensations which are already put in a trust until my son is of age." This gave Lori the right to drive to Randy's house and take Tyson away from him.
How did Randy Roth get caught?
After the detective consulted with the attorney and obtained a search warrant from the court allowing them to arrest Randy and search his home, Randy was apprehended. Although there was a lack of evidence at the time, the issue was resolved when the detective got her hands on Cindy's diaries, which recorded all of the abuse Randy had inflicted on her. He claimed that the actions that led to the deaths were the ideas of his deceased wives ("romantic" notions in both cases), and he had the bodies cremated as soon as possible. He was also convicted of theft in the form of defrauding insurers and the Social Security Administration. He was sentenced in 1992 to one year in prison for theft and 50 years for first-degree murder. Currently, Randy Roth, 68, is incarcerated at Stafford Creek Corrections Center.
