Gary Mendez (James Roday) and Maggie Bloom (Allison Miller) met each other at a vulnerable time in their lives. There is no debating that fighting cancer incredibly difficult and it brought them face to face with their mortality. Fighting cancer alone was not only physically tedious but a nightmare mentally as well. But with each other's support, they both felt stronger. It got them closer and formed an unspoken bond that could possibly not be severed under any circumstances.

Even today, almost four months after their break-up, there are things between them that have gone unspoken but their hearts are still tugged together - only this time, in different ways.

In Episode 13, Maggie and Gary are invited to a friend's anniversary celebration of being in remission. They enter the party together, which leads to their friends to wonder if they are back together. While clarifying that the two are still very much broken up, Maggie creates waves of murmurs when she reveals that it was actually her who couldn't commit to Gary. Ye, the celebrations go on as per plan until their friend Elena (Carla Jimenez) suddenly has a breakdown.

Elena breaks down at the thought of cancer returning despite her being in remission for a year now. It is a fear that has gripped Maggie and Gary too - the fear of losing each other to cancer. Watching Elena burst into tears in the middle of her own celebration was not easy for either of them.

On their way back, in a sequence that was intended to be false, Gary confesses his love for Maggie. In Gary's head, who is imagining the scene, Maggie loves him back and they kiss. But the truth is, as Maggie had earlier said, she no longer thinks she wants to be with Gary.

Having spent the majority of her time in the last three months with Eric (Jason Ritter), Maggie wants to take her time to heal. So even though Gary doesn't express his mind to her in reality, she says it is better for both of them if they remain friends.

And a broken Gary agrees with her. What else could he have told her?

'A Million Little Things' airs on Thursdays at 10/ 9c on ABC.
