'Britannia' Season 3: Druid resistance to Cait's journey, here are 5 reasons why this instalment should end show
When the Romans came to Britannia, they had only one agenda - to bring this mystical, mysterious land to its knees and make it a colony. Years ago, Julius Caesar had made his way across the ocean but was literally shooed away by the might of the Druids. But now, the Romans sent Aulus (David Morrissey) and he's not taking no for an answer.
He has been for two consistent seasons. Only now we think that the next season should be the last. The Season 2 of the show is running in the US, and has already been renewed for Season 3. Here's why we think the show must conclude after Season 3 - and make no more. Anything more and it might spoil its own legacy.
Druid resistance
The resistance by the Druids is taking shape in 'Britannia' right now but it will be a long, winding way for it to work out. At the moment, the Druids find themselves split in two with one faction following Veran (Mackenzie Crook) and the other following Harka (also played by Crook). This is going to sooner or later blow up and the two factions will find themselves confronted with the other. Stretching the resistance into another season might see Aulus repeat the "divide and rule" strategy as he did with the tribes leading to a redundant season.
Veran and Harka's personal duel
The Druids and their resistance aside, these twin brothers are now seething for revenge. Harka wants to end Veran for the betrayal he committed all those decades ago. And Veran? Now with The Dead Man back to life, he must do everything to send him back to the clutches of death. For Harka works with the earth demon Lokka himself. And that is to not be taken lightly. This chapter is one to end in Season 2 itself - at least if it were up to us. But stretching it into Season 3 and beyond might not be the best of ideas.
Cait's destiny
Cait (Eleanor Worthington Cox) has lost pretty much everything following the Romans' massacre of the Cantii tribe. Since she met Divis (Nikolaj Lie Kaas), together they have been working towards fulfilling the prophecy. According to this, Cait is the young girl who will force the Romans to flee - "hope is the daughter of a blind father". Divis and Cait's journey has been a long one - not to mention painful for Cait. But now in Season 2, the show has been picking up the pace on this front. By the end of this season, we expect some update on this prophecy. And if not, the makers must conclude it in the upcoming season. There are complaints even now, midway through Season 2, that the show has already focused on this for a long time.
Aulus' downward spiral
So Aulus has been riding high the horse of victory. The power that he now holds in Britannia is sooner or later going to get to his head. If the Season 2 premiere of 'Britannia' was any proof, Aulus refuses to stand down even in front of Rome's emperor. The Druids believe that the General is Lokka himself and with such might that it is impossible to hold him back. Unless, of course, according to the prophecy. This ultimate showdown is a matter of Season 3 perhaps. Aulus has been looking for Cait all over the pastures and mountains of Britannia. He hasn't found her yet. But maybe Willa's (Jodie McNee) new information might lead him to Cait.
Aulus and Amena
Is this a love affair? Is this a political association? Or is this friends with benefits? Perhaps only Aulus and Amena (Annabel Scholey) can tell what their relationship is. But we're thinking it might be over this season what with Amena being arrested in her own home. Kill off either party and let the other go on without them - that would be interesting to watch in Season 3.
'Britannia' airs on Epix on Sundays at 9/8c.
