10 movies to watch out for in 2019: Superheroes, live-action remakes, space adventure and more

2019 is going to be packed with drama and nostalgia with movies like 'The Lion King' and 'Aladdin' getting live action remakes
UPDATED JUN 2, 2021

Movies to watch out for in 2019: Glass (January 18)

What better start to the year than the ulmination of the Unbreakable trilogy? As the third and final part this movie will round up and offer closure to the events of the 2000 masterpiece, 'Unbreakable', and the 2016 second installment, titled 'Split' - both from the house of M. Night Shyamalan. Despite the rave reviews for both, the latter got its fair share of criticism too for coming off as an abliest take on the psychological disease, split personality disorder. But considering what splendid a job Shyamalan had done with both, 'Glass' is sure to be a hit once again, with its psychhological thriller quotient and higly anticipated twists.

Captain Marvel (March 6)

Ever since the trailer dropped, this Brie Larson starrer has created a lot of buzz on social media. From seeing Larson get all tough as Captain Marvel, to watching her punch an elderly person on the subway — there were a lot of conflicting reactions to the film. But one thing is for sure, fans cannot wait to find out more about the backstory of one of the most iconic characters of the Marvel Comics Universe, and of course find the answers to why an elderly woman got punched by a decent looking lady on the subway train.

Avengers 4 (May 3)

After the massacre that Marvel's Infinity War unleashed with Thanos pretty much disintegrating every Avenger into thin air with just a snap of his fingers, the next instalment in the franchise has quite easily and unsurprisingly become the most highly anticipated film of 2019. Will Thor and Loki come back? What happens to our beloved new-age Spider-Man? What about Peter Quill? Is Gamora really dead? Too many questions, and sadly, an even longer wait. May 2019 couldn't get here any faster it seems!

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (May 10)

Two of our most favorite childhood memories smashed into one! For starters, it's frickin' Pikachu, people! And if that doesn't excite you, get this: He's a detective! He talks! And also goes 'pika pika'! But all those exclamations aside, what really takes the cake is the fact that voicing Pikachu in this upcoming film will be none other than your favorite Deadpool, aka Ryan Reynolds. The trailer being packed with action and humour has only heightened the anticipation for this film. You know what's better? This gives Ryan Reynolds ample chance to slide in a "Hey, I played Pikachu in the new film!" joke in whatever upcoming Deadpool movie might be on the horizon. Win-win!

Toy Story 4 (June 20)

You all thought Andy going off to college was going to be it, aka the end of an era. But the 'Toy Story' creators were kind and decided to bless us all with another instalment of the beloved animated movie franchise that has made its way into people's hearts ever since the first film came out. This time action unfolds in the form of Buzz Lightyear and Sheriff Woody going out to find Bo Peep and bring her back. Need we sell it more?

Spider-Man: Far From Home (July 5)

When Tom Holland put on the spidey costume and gave us our third Spider-Man, none of us had expected that we would fall in love with the Brit actor harder than Toby McGuire's rendition of the Marvel character. But we did, and looks like Tom decided he was going to be in for round two and here we are. With an exceptionally hot Aunt May and the sassy Tony Stark breathing down your neck, how Tom's Peter Parker manages to be a regular school-going kid is beyond our comprehension. But he does. And Thanos having wiped off his existence isn't going to get in the way of that.

The Lion King (July 19)

Okay, this is it. This is the film we have all been waiting for, and not just because we think there could be an upgrade to the original Disney animated version of the tale. First, let me gush a bit about baby Simba. How cute is he! The trailer for the live action version of the film has pretty much everything going for it. From the scenic beauty to symbolism, and of course, the loud, refreshing beginning note of 'The Circle Of Life'. It's just too on point, and too close to pretty much everybody's heart. The best part? The trailer is an exact replica of the 1994 original. It's going to be a memorable journey.

It: Chapter 2 (September 6)

The reason the recent film adaptation of Stephen King's novel had managed to wow so many is because of its creep factor minus the jump scares. Which only keeps us hooked on for Chapter Two because this franchise is like the gospel for pretty much every horror buff. Let's just hope the creators do not drag it out too much and ruin the story for fans like they did with 'The Conjuring.' All of It's potential as the scariest clown on the block must not go to waste!

Frozen 2 (November 27)

There are two fool-proof ways to ensure a hit movie: a strong female lead, and a tight soundtrack. Luckily for fans, the Disney animation 'Frozen' had both. We fell in love with the strong and gutsy Elsa, and with Ana's naïveté. And, of course, who could ever forget the adorable snowman, Olaf? What's better this time? It's not snowing anymore so it will be fun to watch Olaf struggle to live through such tiring, dry times for his poor soul. 'Frozen' fans know this sheer obsession with a snowman is a bit too much at times but, hey, we truly can't let it go!

Star Wars: Episode IX (December 20)

Things have been dark in a galaxy far, far away, especially since the tragic passing of everyone's beloved jedi Luke Skywalker. Finally, the time has come for Rey and Kylo Ren to take charge and jump into action as ardent fans gather around once again to watch how the remaining jedis battle it out towards a goal of peace. Not only will Episode IX be the finale of the trilogy, it will also offer closure to the true fate of both Rey and Kylo.
