The previous season ended with the professor experiencing a mental breakdown that lands him in a psychiatric facility.

The absence of Dr. John Sturgis (Wallace Shawn), the eccentric yet lovable mentor of Sheldon Cooper (Iain Armitage), was felt very intensely during episode 2 of the series which aired on September 3. Dr. Sturgis, who plays the role of a physics professor, later becomes Sheldon’s mentor and his meemaw’s gentleman friend was one of the most loved and adored characters on the show. Despite his quirks and eccentricities, he managed to become a great role-model/mentor for young Sheldon.

The previous season ended with Dr. Sturgis experiencing a mental breakdown that lands him in a psychiatric facility. We were hoping to see our favorite professor back on screen this season but unfortunately, Dr. Sturgis still hasn’t made an appearance on the show. The pilot episode of the ongoing season 3 revealed that Dr. Sturgis is still at a facility receiving all the care he needs. In the absence of Dr. Sturgis, Sheldon is left with no mentors or teachers and he decides to take the path of self-learning. It is not just Sheldon and meemaw who are missing the goofy professor but also the fans.

Several fans expressed their hopes to see the return of the brilliant Dr. Sturgis on the show. A fan tweeted, “I hope Dr. Sturgis gets well soon so Sheldon can have his mentor back so he does not have to do learning in a broom closet anymore! Praying for the health of Dr. Sturgis (I know he is a fictional character but that's how invested I am in this show!) @YoungSheldon #YoungSheldon”. Another fan wrote, “when is Dr. John Sturgis coming Back!!??. I love the character. Please make him a permanent character AGAIN!!!#YoungSheldon”. “I still can't get over the fact that it's uncertain if actor #WallaceShawn will return as #DrSturgis in #YoungSheldon! @CBS We demand more Dr. Sturgis!”, expressed a fan.

We hope that Dr. Sturgis makes a speedy recovery and returns to be a source of inspiration and fun to all the fans and Sheldon. You can catch up on all-new episodes of ‘Young Sheldon’ every Thursday at 8/7c only on CBS and CBS All Access.
