'Willow' star Warwick Davis drops update on proposed Disney+ sequel series to George Lucas' epic fantasy film
George Lucas' 'Willow' may not have been as massive a commercial success as his other projects but the epic fantasy film has developed something of a cult following over the years.
Fans of the movie were overjoyed when the film's director Ron Howard announced in May 2019 that a Disney+ sequel series to 'Willow' was in the works.
Since then we've been eagerly waiting to find out more about the project and earlier in January, screenwriter Jon Kasdan, who is attached to the project, tweeted an image that suggested that the writer's room for the TV series has begun work.
Now Warwick Davis, who played the titular hero Willow Ufgood in the movie, has revealed that the project has not been greenlit yet but there's still a pretty good chance it is on the way.
"The internet has got a little bit ahead of us here," Davis told Inverse. "There's a lot of work on development and working out what this potentially could be, but there's no definite green light, go, we're doing this. There's a lot of work going on."
He continued, "The right people have come together. There's a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of goodwill from the right people and also from fans. I think what's really so heartwarming is the enthusiasm of people around the world."
"So, yeah, no definite news there. I think there's a firm chance that this is going to be something that becomes a reality. Definitely," he added.
If the sequel series does become a reality, fans can expect to see Davis back in the lead role. "I'd love to do this," the 49-year-old actor said. "When I did the movie I was 17, and it was a steep learning curve to play the character. Ron Howard was an integral part of my being able to do it."
He continued, "Now I feel, as an actor, I've learned a lot over the years. And to play the character older would be fascinating. I mean he's older, he's wiser — has he learned to become a sorcerer? Has he mastered the craft? What's been going on in the world of Willow?"
"So yes, if we do get to do this, there'll be a wonderful story to tell, I'm sure. And I'll greatly relish the opportunity," he added.
