Steve Carell starrer comedy series ‘Rooster’ renewed for Season 2 — here’s what we know so far
Looks like ‘Rooster’ is not just a one-semester story after all. Right in the middle of its debut run, the comedy has already locked in a second season. The show, led by Steve Carell, has been building momentum since its premiere, and now HBO has made it official with a renewal announcement. Season 2 will shift the timeline forward, picking things up during the spring semester at the fictional Ludlow College. If you have been watching, you can see why this happened so quickly. The series comes from Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, the same creative minds behind ‘Scrubs’, and they seem to have a bit of a golden touch when it comes to half-hour comedies. With this renewal, Lawrence continues a pretty wild streak, where every comedy he has helped create ends up sticking around for more than one season.
The decision did not come out of nowhere either. A few behind-the-scenes developments made it pretty clear that the show had strong backing. For one, it secured a hefty $21 million tax credit from California for its second season, as reported by Deadline. Then there are the numbers, and those are hard to ignore. When 'Rooster' first dropped, it pulled in 2.4 million viewers across platforms in the U.S. within just three days. That is a big deal for a comedy, especially on HBO, where that kind of debut has not been seen in over a decade. And it did not just spike and disappear. Weeks later, the show is still hanging around near the top of the charts on HBO Max, often landing in the daily top three.
Even more interesting, the first four episodes are averaging about 5.8 million viewers in the United States, putting it on track as the most-watched new HBO comedy in over 10 years. Those are the kind of stats that make renewal decisions feel like a no-brainer. Amy Gravitt, who oversees comedy programming for HBO, shared her thoughts on the show’s reception and what is ahead. “It’s been heartening to feel the audience embrace ‘Rooster’, as we did when we first saw Steve, Bill and Matt bring this character to life,” she said. “Along with our partners at WBTV and Doozer, we’re looking forward to seeing what Ludlow’s Spring Semester has in store for this incredible comedy ensemble.”
Meanwhile, ‘Rooster’ is set on a college campus, but it is not really about lectures or exams. The story revolves around a writer, played by Carell, and his complicated bond with his daughter, portrayed by Charly Clive. Their relationship is messy, funny, and at times a bit uncomfortable in a way that feels very real. The supporting cast helps keep things lively, with names like Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, and Lauren Tsai rounding out the lineup. As for Season 2, casting details are still under wraps for now, so there could be a few surprises waiting down the line. Moreover, new episodes from the first season are still rolling out every Sunday on HBO Max.
