After nearly ten years of monsters, mysteries, and memories, 'Stranger Things' is inching toward its final curtain call. Season 5, the last chapter of Netflix's cultural phenomenon, is nearing its conclusion, and the mood surrounding Hawkins has shifted from excitement to quiet dread. With the final episodes set to arrive in two waves later this month, fans are preparing themselves for an ending that may not spare every beloved character. The show's creators and cast have remained notably tight-lipped about who survives the final battle and who doesn't.

That silence has only intensified speculation, especially as viewers mark December 25 and December 31 on their calendars. Notably, Gaten Matarazzo, who has portrayed the endlessly lovable Dustin Henderson since season 1, recently offered a gentle but sobering message to fans. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the actor didn't sugarcoat what lies ahead. "I understand the anxiety. I hear you," Matarazzo said. "We're all here for all that support for whatever happens. If your favorite is no longer with us or not, who knows? I don't really have any words of comfort. To do the most prep you can: get some tissues, get some ice cream, get some friends, and some family."

While his tone was warm and reassuring, the message itself felt like an emotional warning. That sense of impending loss is echoed in the newly released trailer for season 5, volume 2. One moment in particular has fans spiraling: Dustin and Steve Harrington once again sharing the now-iconic line, "If you die, I die." First introduced in season 3, the line once carried humor and loyalty. Now, in the shadow of the show's ending, it feels ominous. Dustin and Steve's bond has grown into one of the series' most cherished relationships.

Both characters have become fan favorites, which only heightens the fear that the show may finally test that bond in devastating ways. Fuel was added to that fear during a seemingly playful moment involving creators Matt and Ross Duffer. During an appearance on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon', the brothers casually knocked Steve's Funko Pop off Fallon's desk, as per Koimoi. While likely meant as a joke, fans immediately read it as symbolic. Steve famously survived an early planned death in season 1 after audiences fell in love with Joe Keery's performance.

Now, with the story reaching its intended conclusion, many believe the show may finally cash in on that long-avoided tragedy. Beyond Steve and Dustin, the final season appears poised to challenge every core character. Eleven stands at the center of the storm, facing what feels like her ultimate reckoning. As she reconnects with her past, including her bond with Kali, and confronts her role in the fate of Hawkins, her journey becomes as emotional as it is powerful. Meanwhile, Will's growing importance to the supernatural conflict hints that his long-simmering connection to the Upside Down may finally come to the forefront.

Season 5 has been structured to maximize that emotional tension. Volume 1, which premiered on November 26, laid the groundwork, raising stakes and reopening old wounds. Volume 2, arriving on December 25, will deliver three episodes that push the story toward its breaking point. Finally, on December 31, the series will conclude entirely, closing the book on Hawkins with what promises to be a bittersweet farewell.
