‘RHOBH’ star PK Kemsley says urging wife Dorit to join ‘toxic’ reality show led to divorce: ‘I lit the fire’
For years, viewers of ‘The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ (RHOBH) watched Dorit Kemsley and PK Kemsley present a perfect life filled with glam, travel, and plenty of headline-making moments. Now, with their marriage coming to an end, PK is looking back and asking a tough question: Did reality TV push things off course? During a recent appearance on the ‘We Need to Talk’ podcast, PK did not dance around the topic. He spoke openly about the early days, long before cameras were rolling. “I lit the fire because I put her on the show,” he said, referring to Dorit’s entry into ‘RHOBH’. “She didn’t want to go on the show.” According to PK, the idea to join the Bravo franchise came from him, not Dorit. After relocating to Los Angeles, he had his sights set on making a name for himself in the city.
When he heard casting was underway for the show, it felt like an opportunity too tempting to pass up. He encouraged Dorit to step into that world, convinced it would open doors and bring the kind of attention he believed they both could benefit from. “First of all, I believed that I had the most beautiful, charismatic, sharp, ferociously ambitious wife. And I wanted to show her off … I thought I was in control,” he stated. At the beginning, everything seemed to click. PK described a gradual shift, one that he admits he did not fully recognize while it was happening. “That show was fun until it wasn’t,” he said. “I was blind to what was going on, what was happening. I didn’t act soon enough.” Between filming and public scrutiny, things became harder to manage.
PK pointed to social media as one of the biggest sources of stress, describing the environment around the show as increasingly difficult to navigate. “It’s very toxic. It’s got worse,” he admitted. He also spoke about how reality television can shape public opinion in ways that do not always reflect real life. According to him, “It’s not my life. It’s a TV show that shows snippets of my life with Dorit, based on the premise of the show. And they cut it, they edit, they show things. They allow storylines that even the producers know are not true to grow, because that’s the brilliance of the show.” Looking back now, PK seems caught between acceptance and curiosity. He made it clear that he is not placing the entire weight of the breakup on the series, but he can not ignore the possibility that things might have turned out differently if they had chosen another path.
“I’m not blaming that show [for] my divorce or my relationship or who I think Dorit is now versus who I think she was, or who I am now,” he explained. “I think the biggest question that I have that will never be answered is that: is Dorit where she was always going to be and always going to end up, or was I responsible for putting her in that world and then that world created what happened now?” Furthermore, he recalled their time in New York City, especially the early days after becoming parents to their son, Jagger. “Life was pretty f*cking good,” he said, reflecting on those earlier years. “Who drove the bus into the wall? Me. Much like I had done many times in my life.” As it stands, Dorit and PK are moving forward separately. The couple first confirmed their split in May 2024, and by April 2025, Dorit officially filed for divorce, bringing an end to their nine-year marriage.
