A TV special is airing on Rob Reiner’s tragic death — here’s how you can watch the emotional one-hour docu
ABC is moving quickly to address one of the most shocking tragedies to hit Hollywood in decades with a primetime documentary special examining the life and legacy of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. Titled ‘The Rob Reiner Story: A Hollywood Tragedy – ABC News Special,’ the one-hour program will air Tuesday, December 16, from 10 to 11 pm EST on ABC, with streaming availability on Disney+ and Hulu the following day. The special comes just days after the devastating news that Reiner, 78, and Singer Reiner, 68, were found dead inside their Brentwood, Los Angeles, home on Sunday, December 14.
Authorities have described the case as an “apparent homicide,” and the Los Angeles Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding their deaths. According to a BBC report, emergency responders were called to the upscale neighborhood at approximately 3.38 pm local time after a request for medical assistance. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. The case took an even more disturbing turn when the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested later that night. He remains in custody on $4 million bail after being booked on suspicion of murder in the deaths of his parents.
As of the most recent update, Nick has not entered a plea, and the legal process is still unfolding. ABC’s special aims to balance breaking developments in the investigation with a comprehensive look at Rob Reiner’s towering influence on television and film. The program traces his career from his breakout role as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the landmark sitcom ‘All in the Family’ to his transformation into one of Hollywood’s most respected directors. Reiner’s body of work includes genre-defining films such as ‘This Is Spinal Tap,’ ‘Stand By Me,’ ‘The Princess Bride,’ ‘When Harry Met Sally,’ and ‘A Few Good Men.’
The documentary also highlights the life and work of Michele Singer Reiner, who built her own career as a photographer, producer, and writer. Known for her involvement in documentary projects and political activism, she was widely respected in creative and advocacy circles. In addition to detailing the investigation, the special examines the deeply personal bonds within the Reiner family. A notable focus is placed on the 2015 film ‘Being Charlie,’ a project that brought Rob and Nick Reiner together professionally. The movie, which Rob directed and Nick co-wrote, explored addiction and recovery.
The subjects mirrored real-life struggles within their family and now take on a haunting resonance in light of recent events. As per ABC News, interviews featured in the broadcast include reflections from actor Corey Feldman, who worked with Reiner on the beloved coming-of-age classic ‘Stand By Me.’ The special also includes commentary from ABC News contributors Chris Connelly and Larry Hackett. Produced by ABC News Studios, the special is executive produced by Muriel Pearson, with David Sloan serving as senior executive producer.
