Why did Carson Daly not interview a drunk Blake Shelton? Fans call it 'saddest' moment on 'NBC's New Year's Eve'

"Did Carson Daly just refuse to interview a drunk Blake Shelton?" is a question most Twitter users have found themselves asking — at least those witnessing the very awkward 'NBC's New Year's Eve 2021' event sure are.

On one hand, hosts Carson Daly and Amber Ruffin's chemistry just doesn't seem to cut it for viewers, and on the other hand, there are CNCO band members grabbing their private parts mid-performance, and a very drunk Blake Shelton screaming "Interview me!" as Daly cues him out to carry on with the show. Yep, that happened.

As if Daly laughing while announcing Shelton as the People's 2016 Sexiest Man Alive wasn't enough, all he asked the visibly drunk, yeehaw-ing country singer was about his engagement to fiance Gwen Stefani. Before Shelton could utter anything beyond that, Daly announced he would be moving on to the music video of his new single 'Minimum Wage' that debuted on the special event.

As the screen shifted from Shelton's face the singer could be heard rambling "That's the worst," before he very exasperatedly begged with a high-pitched tone: "Interview me!".

The internet has decided to dub this as the "saddest quote of the night". Why Daly decided to cut Shelton out is anybody's guess but perhaps it was to stick to the program schedule and nothing more. Maybe Daly didn't expect Shelton to be ready to have some drunk rambling fun, as fans have pointed out on Twitter: "Blake Shelton drunk on #NBCNYE and producers cut that train wreck short."

But the rest of the Internet was really up for it. Taking it to Twitter, users shared how "Blake Shelton must've been drunk as hell and Carson cued that video so damn fast." Others felt him "saying this is the worse interview and interview me is a perfect end to 2020."

Some shared: "THAT may have just made me laugh louder than anything this year. @blakeshelton getting UNJUSTLY cut-off by @NBCNews @lastcallcd and hearing him eek out 'This is the worst...' --- 'INTERVIEW ME!' ... Come on, @ambermruffin can you make an interview happen? We know it will be gold." The user also tried to get a "interviewblake" hashtag tending, while others pleaded with NBC to "bring back Blake Shelton. He was getting ready to get rolling."

For others, however, it was the title of his song that didn't sit right. Some also didn't appreciate Shelton saying he doesn't care what happened this year as he got engaged to the woman of his dreams. "Blake Shelton really just wrote a song about min wage. Oh lawwwwd! #NBCNYE homie is a millionaire saying love is money. What?!"

The 'NBC New Year's Eve 2021' aired on Thursday, December 31, at 10 pm.
