Why Patrick Mahomes' wife Brittany Matthews quit her stellar soccer career despite being record-breaker at UT Tyler
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI: Brittany Matthews is widely recognized as the glamorous wife of the Kansas City Chiefs star, Patrick Mahomes, but sadly not much is mentioned about her spectacular soccer career that was cut short due to many personal and professional reasons. The 27-year-old co-owner of the Kansas City Current, who married Mahomes in 2022, was once a star player with UMF Afturelding in Iceland before she gave it up to become a personal trainer.
Matthews kick-started her stellar football career when she went to pursue a BS degree in Kinesiology at the University of Texas. During her four years at the university, she played for the UT team, Tyler, where she scored 31 goals and secured 16 assists that helped their team to garner a 56-13-5 record. In her last season with the program, Matthews established a single-season record by netting 18 goals. The mother-of-two is still the program’s second all-time leading goal scorer, according to SportsKeeda.

Why Brittany Matthews left UMF Afturelding?
In 2017, Matthews graduated from the University of Texas and signed a contract with UMF Afturelding/Fram that led her to Iceland. Unfortunately, she spent only one season with the club, where she scored only two goals in 5 major games. Despite her short spell abroad, Matthews was able to secure the championship trophy in Iceland. She soon returned to the US and decided to quit her promising soccer career. Matthews then launched Brittany Lynne Fitness, for which she became a certified personal trainer and health advocate, according to Newsweek.
According to Matthews, she never foresees herself becoming a professional soccer player. She, in fact, never thought that she'd have a successful career during her university years. "I didn't even see myself playing college soccer when I graduated high school. However, I ended up coming to UT Tyler to play soccer because it was close to home, and I knew a few girls that played here that loved it and told me I need to join the family," she said in an interview with Tyler Paper, Sportskeeda reported.
How did Brittany Matthews’ personal life affected her soccer career?
A part of the reasons why Matthews called off her soccer career is that she wanted to start a happy married life with Mahomes, whom she dated since she was a student at Whitehouse High School in Texas. Patrick and Matthews exchanged vows at a lavish Hawaiian wedding in March 2022. They are now proud parents to two beautiful children, daughter Sterling Skye and son Patrick 'Bronze' Lavon Mahomes III. Matthews has also become a huge social media personality with more than 1.3 million followers on Instagram.
