Who was Udo Kier? Breaking down ‘Dark Winds’ Season 4 Episode 7’s surprise tribute card
The latest episode of ‘Dark Winds’ did not just leave viewers with a jolt of story tension. It also closed with something somber and a little unexpected. A simple title card was shown at the end of Episode 7, reading, “In memory of Udo Kier.” The penultimate episode of Season 4 carries that dedication, and for many watching at home, it raised a question almost immediately: Who exactly was Udo Kier, and why now? The AMC crime series has made a habit of honoring people behind and in front of the camera. This season alone has already paid tribute to Robert Redford, who serves as an executive producer, and also honored makeup artist Taylor Roberts. Still, Kier’s name might not ring a bell for everyone tuning in, especially since he was not part of the show’s main cast from the beginning.
In Season 4, Kier played Gunthar Vaggan, a frail and unsettling presence. He portrayed Irene’s (Franka Potente) father. Gunthar is not written as an easy character to digest. He’s a former Nazi officer, a man carrying the weight of a dark past into the early 1970s timeline of the show. He was suffering from dementia and often confused identities, including his own daughter’s. Episode 7 marks the end of Gunthar’s arc in a way that is both abrupt and chilling. He wanders away from the bunker he shares with Irene, clearly disoriented, and what follows is not mercy. Irene makes a choice and runs him down with her car. That scene also happens to be Kier’s last appearance on the show, which explains the timing of the tribute card.
Meanwhile, Kier passed away on November 23, 2025, in Rancho Mirage, California, at the age of 81. The news was confirmed by his longtime partner, artist Delbert McBride, cited by Variety. No official cause was publicly shared. By the time of his death, filming for ‘Dark Winds’ Season 4 had already wrapped. For longtime film fans, Kier’s résumé stretches far beyond this one role. His early career includes cult projects like ‘Flesh for Frankenstein’ and ‘Blood for Dracula’. In the early ‘90s, he appeared in ‘My Own Private Idaho’, a film that still gets talked about decades later. More recently, Kier showed up in projects like ‘Downsizing’ and ‘The Secret Agent’, shifting easily between genres.
Television audiences may remember him from ‘Hunters’, where he portrayed Adolf Hitler in its second season. He also ventured into the gaming world, lending his voice and presence to titles such as ‘Call of Duty: WWII’ and ‘Martha Is Dead’. At the time of his passing, he still had projects in the pipeline. One of them, ‘The Ark: An Iron Sky Story’, lists him as playing the Grand Master. Another, the much-discussed video game ‘OD’, brings together big names like Hideo Kojima and Jordan Peele. Whether Kier completed his work on the latter project remains unclear, especially since production timelines were disrupted during the 2023 SAG (Screen Actors Guild) strike.
