Who is Mina Sue Choi? ‘Single’s Inferno’ Season 5 fans defend Miss Earth winner after she's hit by hate storm
The Korean reality television show 'Single's Inferno' debuted on Tuesday and was embroiled in controversy within minutes. At the centre of it all is the 26-year-old Mina Sue Choi. With each new episode's release, Sue Choi became the target of intense online hatred as fans continued dissing her, to the point of exhaustion, over her choices on the reality television show. Sue Choi, a former Miss Earth 2022 winner, has also served on the Miss Earth Foundation, representing WWF and UNEP. She was born in Australia and grew up in the United States before graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a degree in Communications.
Pop Rant reports that Sue Choi was consistently attacked on her Instagram page, with several comments blaming her shifting preferences, as shown on 'Single's Inferno'. Her personal social media content came under heavy flak as well in what can best be described as a deliberate case of online harassment. Instead, Sue Choi's Instagram account soon disabled all comments on her posts. Her trajectory throughout the show's first set of episodes was quite complicated, to say the least.
At first, she managed to extract interest from three other male contestants on the show, namely Sung-hun, Su-bin, and Seung-il. When the hour of her first Paradise date arrived, Sue Choi chose Su-bin to be her partner. However, the show's dynamics required that relationships evolve rapidly for survival. As the Hottest Couple photoshoot came to pass, Sun-ho assumed the top spot, followed by Su-bin and Sung-min. Although Su-bin explicitly expressed his feelings for Sue Choi, the latter chose Sung-min to be her partner for the next Paradise date.
Fans soon took to Reddit to express their dislike of Sue Choi, and the r/Singlesinferno2 subreddit exploded with hate. One user wrote, "I saw her from the start, and I didn't really like her; something about her was off to me, but I really tried not to pay much attention to it. She keeps switching up, and of course, there's nothing wrong with exploring options, don't get me wrong, but at least do it correctly. Every time a guy is with another girl, and she's interested in him, she makes it obvious to both the guy and the girl, which is irritating. Like, what the heck."
Another user remarked, "I honestly liked her until ep 3-4 when she started becoming messy asf and going back and forth between 4 different guys all bc they’ll be like “oh i like u” and then she’ll switch up immediately." However, not all comments were replete with hate. Certain sections of the audience were apt to point out the amount of projection that Sue Choi was showered upon as explained by an user, "I would say that she doesn’t have “proper” feelings for any of the guys right now but she’s just trying to catch a vibe with any of the guys she’s attracted to and see if it leads to something more which is absolutely fine." 'Singles' Inferno' is available on Netflix.
