‘American Idol’ Season 24 contestant, 19, spent years struggling to speak — then won judges over on Live TV
ABC's 'American Idol' is gearing up for its return with Season 24, and expectations are already mounting high. Premiering Monday, January 26, the first episode will showcase a heartfelt performance that moves the judges. The contestant shared that singing helped him cope with his struggles, prompting judge Luke Bryan to call him a 'real singer.' Furthermore, his performances earned him praise from Lionel Richie and Carrie Underwood.
An early sneak peek of 'American Idol' Season 24 premiere shows a 19-year-old Long Island student, Jesse Findling's emotional performance. The singer shared how music helped him cope with a lifelong stutter. He also opened up about how he started singing, talking about singing with his siblings and school choirs, saying, "When I sing, I don't stutter," according to Filmogaz.
Findling also spoke candidly about the emotional toll of his speech disorder, admitting, "It was definitely hard to hide my stutter from others," and recalling feelings of isolation and embarrassment that ultimately strengthened his determination not to let it limit his dreams. For his 'American Idol' audition, Findling performed Benson Boone's 'In the Stars,' a song he often sang with his brother, saying, "Walking out with a golden ticket would mean that everything I’ve struggled with has led me here."
After an emotional performance, Findling received praise from all the judges. "I don't think I blinked one time,'' Bryan said. "You're a real singer. I'm really proud of you. I love this show. I love this show because we get to meet kids like you." Grammy winner Carrie Underwood also praised Findling, "Your voice is beautiful. You have a beautiful tone. We could understand everything you were singing, and you were in the song emotionally, which just took us right there with you."
Meanwhile, Lionel Richie added, "Problem? What problem? You don't have a problem. The only thing wrong with you is you have to figure out how you're going to navigate this career." His family joined Findling as he received a golden ticket. He shared in a confessional, "When I was singing that song, I was thinking of younger me, who wouldn't speak in class, who was scared of what people thought of him, and the fact that I got this is just proof that everything’s working out how it should. I'm going to Hollywood Week."
As per reports, 'American Idol' Season 24 auditions took place through the Idol Across America virtual program from Tuesday, August 26, to Saturday, October 6. On the other hand, in-person auditions filmed at Belmont University in Nashville, as per Gold Derby. To add more, Hollywood Week of Season 24 is heading to Nashville for the first-ever 'Music City Takeover.' This new change features a single, high-stakes performance and the largest Hollywood Week cut in Idol history.
