From 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' to 'Watson': 7 television shows that were taken off the air in 2026
The majority of television shows indeed have a short life span on air, and their final moments are often marked by heartbreaking network decisions to continue. Several factors go into determining whether a show is canceled. While several shows routinely end their broadcast runs, others are often cancelled or discontinued based on their performance and audience engagement ratings. The year 2026 has already seen the end of several major television shows, and here we take a look at seven of them.
1) Talamasca: The Secret Order
Season 1 of Anne Rice’s ‘Talamasca’ debuted back in 2025 on AMC and consisted of six episodes. The show chronicled the adventures of a secretive society of men and women dedicated to identifying and preventing vampires, witches, and other supernatural creatures worldwide. The show was officially cancelled on March 27, primarily due to poor ratings and its inability to capture the imagination of a wider audience.
2) Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Sarah Michelle Gellar recently confirmed on March 14 that the much-anticipated 'Buffy reboot' show would not see the light of day. The Hulu show has been scrapped following an executive decision not to move forward, due to creative differences and a lack of proper scripts on which to base it. The reboot was supposed to continue the unfolding of a new chapter in 'Buffyverse' and was being developed with Lila and Nora Zuckerman as the writers and Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao at the helm.
3) Watson
Season 2 of 'Watson', which is currently airing new episodes, will conclude with the series finale, slated for release in May. It has now been confirmed that CBS will take the show off the air following the end of Season 2, leaving audiences bereft of the character of Sherlock Holmes's trusty friend and compatriot. The rising budgetary constraints, combined with the lack of proper returns, forced the network to make a decision.
4) Access Hollywood and Access Live
NBC has decided to seal the fates of both 'Access Hollywood' and 'Access Live', with the latter being cancelled. The two entertainment news shows had a dedicated audience base, with 'Access Hollywood' airing episodes for almost three decades now. The dynamic shift from first-run syndicated programming to social media-driven digital content is believed to have led to the cancellation.
5) DMV
There are certain shows that fail to pick up during their debut season and are therefore inadvertently taken off the air. Premiering on CBS last fall, the workplace comedy show was created by Dana Klein and starred Tim Meadows, Tony Cavalero, Molly Kearney, Harriet Dyer, Gigi Zumbado, and Alex Tarrant. The finale of 'DMV' is scheduled to drop in May. CBS has reportedly severed ties with Klein, instead emphasizing 'Marshalls' and 'George & Mindy's First Marriage' as prime time programming.
6) Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
This Paramount+ show is produced by CBS Studios and is the twelfth 'Star Trek' series. The show debuted with its first season on January 15, and Season 2 has reportedly finished filming. However, the network is yet to announce a release for the sophomore season. Season 3 isn't in the offing as the show has now been cancelled. Despite positive reviews, the show was axed due to low Nielsen ratings.
7) Palm Royale
Lastly, Apple TV+ has officially announced that there won't be a third season of Kristen Wiig's 'Palm Royale,' and the Season 2 finale will now serve as the series finale, bringing an abrupt end to the underdog series with Maxine Simmons in the lead as she tried her best to infiltrate the elite Palm Beach society. The existential dilemma in which Simmons eventually found herself, though entertaining, wouldn't last long altogether. Although 'Palm Royal' earned eleven Emmy nominations, the decision to discontinue the show marks a shift in Apple TV's strategy.
