Where was 'Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man' filmed? The film explored epic UK locations beyond Birmingham
While Birmingham primarily served as the backdrop for the critically-acclaimed 'Peaky Blinders' series, the film, 'Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man', has sequences shot at locations that added more depth to the movie's tone. Part of the film was shot at Digbeth Loc. Studios were located elsewhere, including Liverpool and North Wales.
The Warehouse 47 on the docks was one of the film's settings for its high-octane sequences. Also, were Castlefield, Castle Street, Manchester; Burton’s Factory, Harehills, Leeds; and Little Germany, Bradford, all of which are considered the UK's industrial regions.
According to the BBC, 'The Immortal Man' crew also stumbled on an unused railway tunnel in Northamptonshire that made headlines earlier. Kelmarsh Tunnel, situated on the former Northampton to Market Harborough line, also became a major set piece for the new film.
Director Tom Harper shed light on the decision to use the tunnel as one of the locations, "There's a tunnel that we use that forms a very important part. It's very, very beautiful in all sorts of ways; it's one of those treasures that you sometimes find when you're filming." He added that the budget allocated allowed for the team to "go to all these incredible places and find all these little-known gems".
Other major locations include Calke Abbey, Derbyshire; St George’s Hall and St. George’s Quarter, Liverpool; Black Country Living Museum, Dudley, West Midlands, and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, north Wales.
Digbeth serving as a backdrop makes sense, given the film's gritty tone and unique culture. It also lends the series greater authenticity, which was primarily shot in Birmingham. It's worth noting that Dudley was also featured in the series previously.
St George’s Hall and St George’s Quarter are no strangers to major projects, as they have previously served as iconic locations for the likes of 'The Batman' and 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them'. Safe to say, these locations have been carefully selected to match the film's timeline.
On the movie front, 'The Immortal Man' opened to a limited release in select theatres on March 6. It is set to release on Netflix on March 20. The film's official logline reads, "Birmingham, 1940. Amidst the chaos of WWII, Tommy Shelby is driven back from a self-imposed exile to face his most destructive reckoning yet. With the future of the family and the country at stake, Tommy must face his own demons and choose whether to confront his legacy or burn it to the ground."
The new and returning cast includes Cillian Murphy, Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, Sophie Rundle, Ned Dennehy, Packy Lee, Ian Peck, Jay Lycurgo, Barry Keoghan, and Stephen Graham.
In a June 2024 interview with Variety, Murphy shared his excitement at the prospect of once again being part of the dark industrial neighbourhood of Birmingham in character, "It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me…It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of ‘Peaky Blinders.’ This is one for the fans." It remains to be seen if 'Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man' can make the same impact as the iconic series.
