Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s high-profile defamation trial is getting close to its end. The case is in its fifth week, including a break for days after Judge Penney Azcarat had to go to attend a conference, after starting on April 11 at a Fairfax County court in Virginia.

The trial saw a number of shocking and bizarre revelations made by both parties as they tried really hard to prove themselves right and the other one wrong. For the uninitiated, the base of the case is a 2018 op-ed by Heard titled ‘I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.’ In the piece, she called herself a domestic violence survivor but did not name her abuser.

However, Depp’s legal team claimed the essay portrayed their client as the wrongdoer and they sued Heard for $50 million. The 36-year-old actress countersued claiming the case filed against her by her former husband was a continuation of “abuse and harassment” she endured during their past relationship. She has asked for $100 million from him.

When will the verdict in Depp-Heard’s trial come?

As per reports, the trial was expected to end on May 19. But due to the evidence given to the court by both sides, the judge reportedly decided to keep the date for closing arguments on May 27. Also, it has been said that since the trial started, the court proceedings regularly began at 10 in the morning and ended five in the evening, which included a 15-minute break in the morning and a lunch break of an hour or two in the afternoon.

But now because of the “salient and substantial amount of evidence” that have been brought before the court by Depp and Heard’s teams, the court has reportedly started to have hearings at 9 am before adjourning it at 5:30 pm. Though it’s not clear yet who is going to win this trial, one thing is sure that none of the parties will face jail time as it’s a civil trial and not a criminal one.

The legal fight has also attracted a lot of attention online as it inches to its conclusion. A user tweeted, “This trial isn’t a criminal case deciding Johnny Depp’s innocence or guilt. It’s a defamation case that will rule on whether or not Amber Heard and other victims of abuse are allowed to speak up. And it’s creating a legal playbook for other abusers to silence their victims.”

Actress Kirstie Alley shared: “I don’t quite understand this trial between Johnny Depp and Amber heard. It seems just like a shit show. Can’t quite figure out how it helps either one of them. Just seems like  a typical day in the life of an extremely talented drug addict and an extremely beautiful narcissist.”

“If the Johnny Depp trial teaches us nothing else its throw out the ‘Believe all Women’ philosophy and replace it with ‘Withhold All Judgment’ & ‘Investigate All Claims’ #JohnnyDepp #AmberHeard #trial,” a tweet added.
